Title: STOVE PIPE
Post by: Minicup28 on June 03, 2010, 11:47:08 AM
I want to put my stove in the cathedral ceiling area under a 12/12 roof. Can the pipe go all the way to the roof thimble near the peak without support. or do I need to tie if off to the loft or something else to take the weight of the pipe. I was thinking of running black pipe as far as reasonable for heat recovery and then insulated near the roof and thru.
Is there code that covers it or other practical advice. This would be for a Resolute size stove, about 40K BTU.

You need to install a cieling box. That will support the weight of the insulated pipe going out the roof. Then you can run black pipe from there down to the stove. Once the black pipe is screwed together it will be self supporting. That's what I did anyways.

Scott is right in that there is hardly any bearing weight on single wall black pipe.  The only thing I would consider is whether your outlet in the stove is top or back.  If back then there might be some pressure on the 90 elbow that you should take into consideration if your run is several feet.
