Title: Green tagged!! Now I really have to pay....
Post by: MikeT on April 14, 2010, 07:52:41 AM
I didn't completely pass my electrical inspection yesterday.  But I did get a green tag on my meter panel, so now the power company will give me my permanent power.  I am really elated.  It  is one step closer to having my CO.  But now comes the sticker shock of paying for the permanent service (upwards of $2K) and an increased monthly service of about no matter how little juice I use.

The price of progress, I guess....

Your permanent service costs are going to be there whenever you install it, so it seems the only question here is how much do you expect your monthly service to be and is that something you are willing to accept now vs using a generator if one is available, or borrowing power from your neighbor if you have one close by.  For the tiny bit of power I use at my build site my monthly electric runs $15 in winter and $30 in summer (air conditioner in workshop).

Now that you have a green tag, do you have a deadline date that you have to get hooked up by to avoid another inspection?

I have requested a quote from my power company for permanent service.  They came out twice before and each time they gave me a quote.  Each quote was valid for 180 days.  At the time, I didn't want to sink the money into the agreement knowing it would take a while before I was really ready.  Now I am really ready.   My monthly minimum will definitely be more.  In this area, the fixed minimum (fixed) costs for sewer, water and electricity run $150+.  That is just the cost of doing business.  I am on the grid in a small community.

As to other deadlines, I have been very fortunate: the inspectors have not been sticklers when the time between inspections exceeds their stated expectations.

So with the electrical, I still have some things to tidy up before I get his okay to cover it with drywall.  I will send a some pictures of my set up and his comments on the way he would like to see things.  While others may have different experiences, at least this will show you what I had/have to do.
