First, the reason I ask this question is because Im going to be spending $4300 on a crawl space foundation which includes footers and block piers down the center and under where a room attaches to the side. My thoughts were,if I bought floor trusses like Osprey is using, while they may be a little costly(I dont know how much yet),I could eleminate center piers and lumber for built up beam, floor joist, and hangers and the cost may equal out and be easier to build.
The same thing goes for the roof trusses,I want the open/vaulted look, and thought after buying a 32' laminate beam(probably real costly) and 2x12 rafter joist, material for collar/rafter ties it probably wouldnt cost much more for trusses.
The real advantage here would be speed. I was hoping to get the company thats doing my foundation to "rough" frame my house too. If the price was right. The quicker the build the less cost, right?
I have asked osprey some of these same questions, but would like all your thoughts and opinions on this.
Am I way off? Are trusses a lot more expensive?
Thanks,Darrell
Certainly worth checking, Tri State Components in Sparta could give you a quote on floor and roof trusses. I've got them supplying open web floor, TJI's and roof trusses on an upcoming job.
Having used 26' clear span I-joists on one project for a friend, I can say they are money well spent! They come with engineering. There is no culling.
They have their own installation challenges but if you have two people it is great!
I like this type of truss for roof.

I assume these will span 20'
devildog,
that is the kind of truss (parallel chord truss) I used in my 20' x 34' 2 story universal we are working on.

rdzone, Thats awesome. Im sure I ve looked thu your thread before, but I dont remember anyone using them. Thanks for the pics. Now I need to go look over the whole thing again.
Do you remember how much you paid each? What snow load are they? What pitch are yours? It looked like 6/12-8/12.I want 12/12 because im going to have a loft. And im not sure if theyll span that far with that pitch.Any info you could give me would be appreciated.
Sorry about all the questions, but you might be able to help me make some final decisions.
Thanks Darrell
I was quoted $2800 for 24" OC trusses for a 20x30 house. They are attic trusses with a 10' dormer built in.
That sounds a little high,or at least higher than I want to pay. Imsure theres a lot more to attack trusses though.
But if the cost is close to stick frame, and itll speed things up,Im definitly going with trusses.
Darrell
Devildog,
I think I paid around $2100 for the parallel chord trusses (17), plus the 2 gable ends. I had an extra parallel chord truss made so I could shift them around, based on poor planning on my part. The chimney would have been going right through one of the trusses. The trusses are 7/12 pitch inside and out. My daughter wants a loft in her room thus the steep pitch. I would have gone steeper, but then things get hard to walk on, when doing the roof. I think they are rated for a 50lb snow load. The truss plant knew I was putting on a steel roof and ran all the numbers for my area here in Alaska.
If you go with stick built and 12/12 pitch you will maximize your usable loft space but, in that case, you should consider contracting the roof portion unless you have experience working that high and steep----especially on a metal roof. The extra $$ will be a lot less than a hospital stay, even with "ObamaCare".
i used trusses on place, 20x36. 18 feet attic trusses, and 18 feet vaulted. 12/12 pitch. cost 1,500. menards limber on sale. look for my link under miman, lots of pics. i was lucky, got a crew to install the trusses, plywood and shingles for $1000.
rwanders, I should still be able to get good headroom w/trusses. And I am going to try to get someone to rough frame the house, and roof it.For speed and safety. If the price is right.
miman, Now thats more like the price range i'm talkin' about. Ill check out your thread.
