Do you think this will work for a beginning driver. Picked up my son a FIRST vehicle today. It is a 1989 Dodge Ram 50, 4WD, 113,000 miles, and original owner. Maybe the price was a tad on the higher (1K)value but it appears to be in good shape withthe exception of Tail pipe and muffler. The higher value according to Kelleys was $1,400.

I was on my 3rd or 4th vehicle before I acquired one that nice.
Looks good. I'd have be tickled to get something like that.
I wouldn't mind having it now. He should be tickled pink!
Sweet! I don't think I had straight sheet metal till I was 25. My '80 W150 is at about 495K... nothing straight on it anymore though.
My first vehicle was a 1966 Dodge Polaris. ;D
It had 166K miles and had a unique smoke screen feature when being followed.... the old 318 would run though. the body was mostly Bondo. I rememer staring it up to warm it up afte school one day and then forgot a book in my locker. When I came backout I couldn't find the parking lot or the car. :-[
Looks Good John. I'd be proud to drive it.

Was that three on the tree or push button tranny?
Nothing would do but a 4 WD truck. He wouldn't even consider or be satisfied with a car. It is a 5 speed on the floor, automatic hubs and fairly new tires. The owner said he got between 20-22 MPG. Although it hasn't been licensed since 2007 the previous owner has driven it to haul wood since then. I am sure there are little things that need taken care of but nothing that should break the bank. And he bought it with "his own money". So much for the pig money he has been saving. I got tickled when he said that's about all the money I had saved up. I said welcome to the real world son. ;D But I would imagine that dear old dad will chip in a little and help him along the way.
But he is due some 4-H money from his annual bacon and ham sales (auction) the first of the month. $28 @ pound on his 5 pound bacon and $18 @ pound on his 22 pound ham. Got real good support this year from the local buisness's who paid nearly $19,000 for 27 hams, 27 bacons and 15 dozen eggs. The grand champion in each class brought in $ $786 for a ham, $600 for a 6 pound bacon and $475 for a dozen eggs. Although he didn't get grand champion he did get Prime in both ham and bacon.

Knowing Dear old Dad...I kinda figured you know when to help a little and when to make him fly on his own.
Pretty well adjusted kid from what I've seen!
Know that those rigs are essentially re-badged Mitsubishi Mighty-Max pick ups. Often times parts can be found a tad cheaper when you cross over the 'manufacturer' lines. ;)

Looks like a nice first vehicle John.
As for parts I seldom buy the manufacturers own branded parts. But I do shop around. For things I don't need in a hurry I sometimes have great luck on prices, availability and delivery from https://www.rockauto.com/

Three on the Tree. That car was a good teacher for me. I learned how to change a starter, water pump, brakes, master cylinder. oil and filters on it ( My dad said not much need to change the oil since I was always adding new). And it taught me the real costs of keeping a vehicle on the road.
Sweet! Congrats on a great find.
What a hoot to be able to get your kids something nice, huh? ;D
