Title: got a goat....
Post by: Homegrown Tomatoes on March 15, 2010, 04:24:27 PM
Hadn't even had her ten minutes and she was already causing trouble.  Daughter tried to open the door to the pen to take her water, and she bolted, running up the road and across the neighbor's pasture, so here I am, six months pregnant, hoofing it and just trying to keep her in sight.  (Man, I need to start doing some of the fat pregnant lady workouts!!!!  I was huffing and puffing.)  Last I saw of her, she was being chased by neighbor's guard donkey across the far back side of his pasture.  I left a note and when neighbor and his son got home, they went out on horseback looking for her.  His son (just a little guy) roped her when he saw her down in a gully.  They just brought her back to me in the back of their truck.  Girls are going to bake them some cookies or something.  She's favoring her back right leg, but it doesn't feel like it is broken.  I have some vet wrap and may wrap it just in case so hopefully it will heal up faster.  She is a little Nubian/Alpine cross and pretty cute, even if already in trouble.  Hopefully will breed her this fall and have fresh milk by next spring early.  (Did I mention that I also bought a baby billy, too, but that he's still nursing and I won't pick him up until a few weeks down the road?  He's a Saanen/Alpine/Nubian mixture and unrelated to the little doeling.)  What was I thinking??  It is all my friend's fault, whatever it was, seeing as she's decided that she's going to make our house the cool agri-tourism spot for the local preschools that her great-neices and nephews attend, so I figured we ought to have a few more critters around if they're going to call it a 'farm'.  Her name was "Allie", but because the girls have a cousin Allison who goes by "Allie" they've changed it to "Allie-luia"  :)

I'm glad you decided to get the second one because goats don't do well on there own since they are herd animals. You might consider a wether to keep her company when you don't want the male in with her all the time. You will find the billy likes to stink himself up and then no one wants to be around him. :-)  Good luck with this adventure !

The fun begins!   ;D  Those goats are Houdinis when it comes to getting out of places - make sure they don't have access to anything you don't want eaten  :D  But they sure are fun & great company.  Glad you got her back.

;D  Fortunately, we just built a new garden fence.  And, fortunately, it doesn't have anything planted in there yet.  So, Allie-luia is spending her first night penned in the garden with a dog kennel to climb into if she feels threatened.  Hopefully we'll get another little pen set up for her tomorrow so I can get her out of the garden.

This should be a fun adventure.  Fun is the operative word here as I never could get them to eat the stuff I wanted them to.  They are cute though. :)

She is cute, Glenn.  Little worried about that one leg though, as she is still favoring it a lot.  Really hope it heals up on its own so it doesn't require another vet visit... we've been to the vet so many times lately that I think we're his sole support.  She seems to be a little more relaxed this morning.... not shaking and looking terrified at least.  Haven't gone in the pen and messed with her yet, though.

Hopefully she'll work the kinks out of it.

Also bear in mind that when they do get out (they will) they'll immediately head to the most expensive car they can find, and climb on top of it. We stayed at a hobby farm B&B a couple years ago, and one goat got out, and climbed on top of the one of the guests cars- a very high-end Mercedes. Luckily, the car owners thought it was funny.

Congratulations on the new kid!

Any other Pontiac fans out there who had different expectations based on the thread title?

Well, she's still favoring that leg, so I called a lady I know who has a lot of meat goats... she says that if I ignore her she'll be fine in a few days.  Still debating on whether or not to take her to a vet.... she looks so pitiful hobbling around. :-\b

I had some goats for a while. Very messy. Do you have an overgrown area you need mowed down? If not I wouldn't own more than 1 or 2. Put collars on them so you can tie them up like dogs.

Great picture!!  But it doesn't look a thing like her, lol.
The whole place is overgrown with blackberries and greenbriar and such, and she seems to prefer weeds to bermuda grass so far.   ???  It's been a while since I posted pics... think I've about forgotten how.

Tried to get her to pose with the crutches, but she thought it made her look like an invalid and wouldn't cooperate.
