We don't seem to be able to catch a break this year on natural disasters. Todays quake in Chile measured 8.8 as compared to 7.0 for the Haiti quake. This one was close to shore but produced a vertical rip in the ocean. Thus the tsunami warning for the entire Pacific Ocean. :o.

I have counted over 30 earthquakes all 5.0 or greater since the 8.8 earlier.
Kinda a bad day all over. Looks like SW VA (Mountains) are getting a lot of snow and it looks like it's overRedover farms too. Hope he's alright.

She is a very nice gal. Highly educated. We have known of each other for many years - I communicated a bit with her father - He is or was pretty big in the Chilean government. Looks like he has written a book now.
We are not sure we are related as the link would be back in Europe or the Baltics, but she said that did not matter because we still became friends.

Her father is also named Pablo and I saw his picture for the first time yesterday. He is an attorney. He looks like he could be my dad or uncle.
Our family got out of Kaunas, Lithuania in 1889 and came to the US. There were numerous relatives buried in the cemeteries there- many Jewish cemetery records list them, but at least after they got to the states most in our family were Catholic. Her family is Catholic I believe as I read her father went to a Catholic University if I recall correctly.
Her father came from Moldova, but that is not far from Lithuania and at one time it was part of or next to Lithuania if I remember the old maps correctly, and one of my great uncles remained in Europe, so there is a more than good chance that we are related. There are few that are not related that spell their name exactly the same as we do. Most others have an extra "s, n" or an "ie" or possibly other changes.
I heard on NPR yesterday 'there have been more than 20 aftershocks since the magnitude 8.8 quake on 2/27 , but today the largest aftershock measuring almost 6.3 shook the area'

there have been a number of aftershocks over 6.0
ok maybe not a lie because 200 aftershocks is "over 20 aftershocks"
and a 6.0 magnitude is "almost 6.3"

Who is "Tony Ring"? Is he a geologist? His graphs seem way, way off.

As far as NPR's report, interview, or whatever it was, I have no idea when it was recorded, but the info you provided seems to fit reports from Chile within 24 hours after the quake, while you quote sites dated March 4 which encompass the whole continent of South America over a 7 day period.
I mean... those are just not comparable data-sets.

He is a man who has studied earth quakes for some years and he made a mistake. Note that I removed the incorrect items before your comment. The website has issued a correction.

The NPR report that you "have no idea about" was a news cast. It was in error, as an intelligent person would understand from reading the usgs sites I referenced.
