Title: A Pattern of Language
Post by: melwynnd on September 16, 2005, 03:38:36 PM
Hi everyone,

I recently discovered a website with this architectural textbook(Oxford even!) online.  I think I'm going to try to get the book on E-bay.  It has a lot of good info that even a non-architect that can understand.  Has anyone else had any exprience with this book?

Hi Sherry,

I think that is the one John has in the book review section.  The link there has several used ones at Amazon.

Alexander is the living Einstein of architecture. We will be working with his ideas for generations.

If you can, get your hands on one of the volumes of his final opus - in four books I think. I've only seen one on a quick interlibrary loan. Very powerful stuff.

the new books I've only skimmed.  They do look interesting.  Both the original and the four new books can be ordered on the site.

not a bad idea at all to get A Pattern Language as a used book.  It's expensive.

I've always liked this section.   Small house for one.  Or two, or a studio, or.....  "make it beautiful" doesn't do much for me, though.  He says that, not sure if it's right here.

Thanks for the input everyone! :)

I watched a used copy on e-bay.  It went for over 40.00 including shipping.  Since I am a librarian, I can sometimes order books at library cost.  I'm going to see if I can get this one.  It will be about $30.00 my cost.  I would be willing to lend it if anyone would like to borrow(after I've read it of course!)

I will look for the other books too.

Have a good weekend!
