Sure looks fishy to me...
I put an ad in Craigslist to sell the inoperable ATV.
Within an hour, got this response.
I would like to know if this is still available for sale.
I emailed back that it was and gave my phone number.
Just got this:
Hello,
I really appreciate your response to my email. I want you to consider
it sold, pls do withdraw the advert from CL to avoid
disturbance, anyways I don't have time to come over to take a look
because of my Business but you don't need to bother yourself with the
shipment, I'll take care of that by engaging the services of a mover,
hence I'll be sending a check and it will be delivered to you via
United Parcel Service, so I'll need you to provide me with the
following informationto facilitate the mailing of the check.
1.full name on the check..
2.Full Physical address to post the check
3.City, State and Zip Code
4.Home & Cell Phone to contact you.
Note that the payment will be shipped to your address via UPS NEXT DAY
AIR SERVICE and I will like you to know that you will not be
responsible for shipping i will have my mover to come over as soon as
you have cashed the check
N.B UPS does not deliver to a P.O box addresses.
I wouldn't touch that one with a 10 foot pole just because of it's wording. Likely they will overpay and have you refund them in real dollars or they will have your bank info etc. or just harvest your personal info.
Maybe I'm wrong.
You might do a lookup on their email address on google.
Tried that and no results on Google.
Your search - gregggrggsame@yahoo.com - did not match any documents.
Suggestions:
I emailed him back that I would only consider Face to face, cash transactions.
Good idea I think.
I was sent the same email for a truck I had listed 6 months back.
It's another sleazy CL scam.
I'd send them back a picture of your beautiful gun collection! Who knows, they may be interested in purchasing a classic and collectible firearm, providing they have the proper licensing of course. You just need to inform them how much the money order for the ATV should be made for. ;D
ALWAYS do face to face on CL stuff, No exceptions, no matter how good it sounds. Don't ask me why I know this.
Bruce
Crags List is a great thing. But I think it needs to be local, face to face, and cash. Show me the money.
Before this deal on the ATV finishes up he will have to have mysteriously your routing number and account number so he can direct deposit it into your account because he needs to get this done now! heh heh
>:( This is an old scam that still works quite often for the crooks among us. The check will ultimately bounce and you will hold a very empty bag.
Your instinctive response to doubt is right on the money, Peter.
If you pursued this, most likely they will send you a "cashiers' check" for more than you are asking, then instruct you to send them back the remainder. There are variations on this that may include shipping & other charges, but that's the gist of it. In two or so weeks, your bank will inform you that you cashed a bogus check. However, the amount you sent from your account to the swindler to cover the overage will be gone forever. As others have said, it's a scam.
There was a tractor listed in Chicago CL
John Deere with back hoe and loader 115 hours
$4500 shipping included from Mexico
the wording was very similar
I emailed and it sounds like a similar scam -- I don't know what they hope to get out of it
there were other rediculously cheap deals too
Peternap, there's no question that it's a scam. Same thing happened to me more than once on craigslist.
CL has info. on their site about how to report this to the feds. I did that in one case; don't know if it does any good, but.....
It's amazing to me that people fall for this, because CL has example scams that show almost word for word what your response said. And CL always says to do FTF cash transactions.
