The stamp vending machine disappeared. I asked and was told that all vending machines were being removed due to high cost of maintenance.
I had to stand in line 15 minutes yesterday to buy stamps from a single counter clerk. How can buying stamps from a clerk cost the postal service less than a vending machine?
Because the clerk is going to be there whether or not a vending machine is or isn't around the corner. In my area, stamps are also sold at virtually all grocery store checkout counters. Only need the USPS clerk for other transactions such as insured or certified mail and large packages.
Yup... I think that is their mindset. The cost is being carried by us through loss of convenience. What does the US post office care if we have to wait in line?
We lost our public scale over a year ago and it has not been replaced. So if you have an out-of-normal weight envelope, and no access to a postal scale, go get in line d*
But we spent lots of money building the first hay bale construction post office in the US. No problem with funds for that.
At first I thought you were refering to my picture! ;D I got that cleared up years ago,......I think ???

Our VERY rural Post Office has never had a vending machine but there is usualy no waiting in any line here either. [cool]
Stamps are vended out of the ATM's at my bank. The vending machines at the Post Office never worked when I went there. Then again, I rarely use stamps anymore with online bill pay. This is becoming one of the largest hits on the postal service.
I noticed 4 years ago when it quit working :-[
Standing in line sucks [waiting]
I asked at the counter & was told that the vending machine started giving out free stamps so they got rid of it...

Crap. Finally part of the stimulus package that I had access to, and I missed it.
I've noticed good customer service is missing.
