Title: Hardy Plank & Mounting Outside Light
Post by: Billisnice on July 22, 2009, 03:22:04 PM
I want to mount an outside light to hardy board. Will dry wall screws work? Will a wood drill bit work in a pinch to pull the 12-2 wire threw a hole in the plank? The plank is 10 yrs old.

Here is the web address of the box i want to mount first at:

thanks

I have seen drywall screws rust in a matter of days, I would use a 2 - 1 inch wood screws or similar for mounting. A drill bit is fine for making a hole for 12-2 wire, I have done it many times, I prefer a spade bit to make the hole a standard size for 2 wires. But in your case you likely only have 1 wire going to this light.

Bill I would either use a cheap regular bit or a mason bit.  That stuff is "Dulling" to say the least. I think I would find me a couple of stainless steel screws for mounting.  The others will rust in time.

I have some dull rusted drill bits to tear up. I will use them. Get some stainless steel screws....ty
