Title: Free Apprentice - Will Help Build To Gain Experience
Post by: kentuckycabin on June 04, 2009, 07:21:26 PM

I am planning to build a 14x24 cabin within the next year but am too intimidated to attempt this without some real experience under my belt.

Consequently, I am hoping to find someone within a reasonable travel distance of Louisville, KY who needs some help building their own cabin.  I can work weekends ...

Please post a reply if you are interested and we can work out the details offline.

Thanks!!!

Is West Virginia a reasonable distance.  ;)  Have a good friend in Louisville.  Grand kids drug him there from the Wild & Wonderful. There have been a few post from people in KY but nothing comes to mind at the present.

great idea... good luck.  Maybe John can pass on your offer if he sells plans to folks near you.

I understand how you feel.  I built my own workshop (only injury out of that was my crushed knuckle via a hammer from an unexperienced helper) and I feel like you do on building a VC.

Have you thought of checking with the locals that build houses, shops, portable buildings?  Even if you helped set up those portable backyard sheds, you would learn about leveling, etc.  Just a thought.

Might be a Habitat for Humanity in your area.  They are always looking for help.  Most contractors will turn down your offer because of insurance , worksman comp. and fear of you getting injured.

if you apprentice in a red seal trade, you have to be paid at least 50% of the journyman rate as a 1st year apprentice. Thats the law here in Alberta and probably all of Canada anyways.

Hmmm ...  Already tried Habitat a couple of times ...

Has John ever considered holding something like a 1 week workshop to build a small 14x24?  Now that would be absolutely perfect!!!   :)

Depending on the region Habitat for Humanity has recently won numerous grants and are aggressively building (needing laborers).  A really good organization.
