It is raining like crazy and is supposed to be changing over to blizzard like conditions by afternoon, so to keep girls out of trouble, I let them make homemade doggie biscuits. My middle daughter LOVES dogs, wants to be a dog when she grows up, etc. So, for Christmas, my oldest found her a "dog bone cookbook" that came complete with a bone-shaped cookie cutter. We've been waiting for a good day to make them and today seemed like the day (in between unpacking, looking for our painting supplies, and ripping out carpet and padding, of course.) So, you mix 1/4 cup peanut butter (perhaps I should say "peamutt butter"?) with a tablespoon of oil (I'm betting they'd actually like bacon grease better), and a cup of water, and then add 2.5 cups of whole wheat flour. I didn't have that much whole wheat without grinding some, and didn't want to wake the baby up from her nap, so we substituted in some buckwheat, rice, and regular flour. Mix in 1 cup oatmeal, and then roll out and cut and bake on an ungreased cookie sheet at 375 for about half an hour. They smell pretty good, but I taste-tested them myself, and I'm thinking next time we use a little bacon grease and a little more peanut butter or an egg. My little dog will eat anything, but I'd be willing to bet that Grover will turn up his nose at them because frankly they don't have a lot of flavor, and he has such "discriminating" tastes. Anyway, a fun book... has recipes for "bark-b-q" and "tight collar diet doggie bones" and "howl wheat". Kids had a blast doing it and they even cleaned up afterward.
I wanna come play at your house. :)
Mrs. Eclipse makes the dog a "meat cake" that contains wheat flour, eggs, liverwurst, pureed beef baby food, and shredded beef jerky. It's about the consistency of a brownie, and the pup loves it.
Can I send my Girls (dogs) to your house for treats. I will have to learn to make treats for them.
Well, as I suspected, Grover wouldn't eat them. He sniffed politely and wagged his tail, and then after taking it from DD, he set it between his paws and looked at it. I just checked a little while ago and it is still there. However, the kids dunked them in their chicken noodle soup at lunch, and giggled like crazy when grandma called and they told her they were eating dog biscuits. They even talked their daddy into eating one when he came home. I think they're a little like hardtack. As I said, next time we try more peanut butter or some egg, too. And probably replace the veggie oil with bacon drippings... then I think Grover might deign to give them more than a sniff.
