Hey I have recently decided to build my own cabin this summer. I'm gonna take on the project with my brother on a piece of my family's land. I found this website this morning doing research for the cabin and have been reading all day. I want it to be a get away but also a place that is livable. I'm looking at building a 16' by 26' cabin with a loft. I am still in the planning stages and will try to have drawings of my plan and pictures of the potential site available as soon as the snow melts.
the ground where I am going to be building is pretty much dirt piled on rock. It is an island I am probably gonna use concrete piers as the foundation but I was curious if anyone has bolted into stable rock is this a possibility?

What location in the country are you trying to build, sounds like northern MN. From what I have learned (some pros will have more wisdom than me) is that if you were doing a post and pier foundation, you would probably drill down until you hit rock and then set your footing right on top of this. Bedrock, if thats what your talking about, is just about the best place to put a footing on. So consider yourself lucky, and unlucky at the same time because you may have to drill shallow holes for footings, but good luck with the well. A 16 by 26 would be very liveable. I have been staying at my unfinished cabin for many weekends and its a 14 by 18. Are you planning to be on the grid?

Building on bedrock makes for a solid foundation. Poured concrete makes an excellent connection.

Our cabin sits on ledge, and we just dug down until we hit rock. The posts sit on the rock, or in some holes we also poured concrete if the hole was too deep. None of it was bolted to the ledge, and it hasn't moved yet!

I want to have a covered deck in the front kind of like this place

A loft would come 8 feet out from the east wall and cover the kitchen. The rest I would just leave open.
I eventually want to have 4 cabins 2 kind of 8x10 bedroom cabins 1 bathroom shower cabin and this as sort of the main living area.
I figure to build this over a long period of time.
where I am its completely dry but my build site an hour away is still covered in snow, as soon as it drys I will post some pictures.

One thing I have heard of people doing if they are afraid of shift, is to drill into the bedrock a few inches and epoxy rebar pins that the footing get poured on top of. Don't know if it is really necessary, just something I've heard. Welcome!
