Title: tomorrow's the day
Post by: Homegrown Tomatoes on February 23, 2009, 10:35:46 AM
Lord willing, we're supposed to close on the new place at 2 PM tomorrow.  Still waiting on the HUD statement from the title company to see that it is really going to happen on time.  Pretty much everything we own is in boxes filling up the house.  Walk thru is this evening.  Still kind of in a state of disbelief. Got my hopes up too high on the other two places we made offers on only to have them bought out from under us, and this time haven't really even dared to hope too much and it looks like it is going to happen after all.

Thanks, y'all.  Stink, maybe I need to have my kids start praying that your house will sell?  They prayed faithfully for ours to sell for ten months and never gave up (I can learn a lot from my kids sometimes!)  My oldest made a sign that she hung up on the bulletin board that said "God will sell the haws (sic)"  Of course, after the house sold, I kept it, and am actually thinking of framing it.   :)

We're having issues with the closing company and the bank not getting their ducks in a row and getting the closing docs together like they should.  At this point, we're not 100% sure we'll close when we were supposed to, but I am still really hopeful.  My realtor just got the HUD, but it had some incorrect numbers on it.  They're trying to get it all corrected and get it back to me so that we can submit it to DH's company (hopefully) in time for them to cut the check to pay inspection fees and closing costs. d* d* d*

Homegrown, go over the HUD statement with a fine tooth comb. There may be more mistakes, if there are some that have shown up. Good luck, I hope everything goes good for you on your closing.

Wells Fargo is never getting my business again.   >:(  They screwed up stuff again and now we have to put off the closing until Thursday.  They wait until less than 24 hours until closing to tell us that they need 10% down (when as recently as this morning they told me that "for sure" only 5% was required) after sending all the HUD statements etc, saying that we only had to put 5% down, thus rendering all the paperwork useless and we have to start over from scratch.  NOT because we didn't do what we were supposed to do, but because they didn't read the entire appraisal where the property was noted to be "rural" and "less than 25% developed"... doesn't matter that the market is strong and balanced there.  Doesn't matter that we've made our payments on time to them for more than 8 years.  Doesn't matter that our credit is good.  Closing on Thursday will leave us only Thursday afternoon and Friday to get all our stuff moved.  It also wipes out the helpers we had lined out.  Those who took off work can't get off on either of those days, so it'll be up to me and DH to move everything.  One of my cousins can help out for a while on Thursday evening, but it really messed up our plans. We have to be out before 5PM Friday so that the owners of the property we're living in can do their final walk-through with us. ::)  Oh well.  Should've known things were going too smoothly.

Hope so too... kind of disgusted with the whole thing.  It isn't a matter of us not having the money to do it.  It is that they had to redo all the statements and we had to re-submit them to the company.

I would complain. not sure to who. But with the economy being the way it is, the bank should not be acting like this. They should be working for your business. If I was the manager and had a complaint I would cut some of the fees (A few 100 dollars) but if this not the first complaint  with the loan officer I would fire him/her.

What?  surely y'all didn't miss me!  I was only gone a few days.  We got internet this afternoon.  According to the map, AT&T could do high speed internet, but the morning after closing this great big kid from AT&T shows up to try to hook it up and he stood on the porch shaking his head sadly and drawled, "It's just too far.  Quarter mile back down 66 we could get it fer sure, but it ain't doin' nothin' here."  So, we thought we were going to have to go with satellite, which we were dreading, but then DH found the little local hightech redneck internet service, and some fellas showed up this morning and climbed all over the roof with a thing that looks like a TV antenna, and the one on the ground kept hollering to the one on the roof until they determined where the best signal was, and here ya have it.  It is as fast or better than what we had in the city.  And a heck of a lot cheaper.

I haven't taken the pictures I should've because we're piled in amongst the boxes, and I'm not sure where the camera is.  I used it to take one picture of our blissed-out dog relaxing on the front stoop with his chin and paws sitting up on the porch.  The previous owners still have the barn FULL of stuff (the deal was they were supposed to have a few things in the barn that they're coming to get in a few weeks, but the truth is that there isn't any room for any of our stuff in it.)  Our front yard looks like the cover story for "Redneck Style" magazine (we did finally get the baby crib off the front porch yesterday, though.)  Kids and dogs are loving it here.  DH and I did all the moving ourselves, except a few of the bigger pieces of furniture, which my cousin helped us with.  We made 3 (or was it 4?) runs with a little Uhaul truck back and forth... must have been four because it was something like 250 miles altogether.  We've been sleeping like rocks... it is so quiet compared to the rent house, and it is great to see a million stars every night again.    Kids are pestering me to death to hurry up and get chickens and get them a house built, and we haven't even unpacked yet.  Haven't even cleaned very good yet.  Almost have the kitchen unpacked.  (Keep in mind we had to get everything out of the rent house and get it cleaned before Saturday (we left that place WAY better than we found it, cleanliness wise.)  Anyway, we worked Wednesday until 1 AM packing the truck, and then hauled stuff until the wee hours on Thursday night, and then did the same all day Friday.  By the time we hauled the last load, we were just chunking stuff off the truck into the front yard so we could get the truck back in time to avoid late fees.  Then we had to go back to the city on Saturday and mop the floors, etc.  So, we didn't really get to start "moving in" until Sunday.

Glenn, you have such a way with words...

We have been REALLY busy, yes.  That and the cedar pollen is about to kill me this year...my eyes have that "morning-after-the-big-party" look all day.  But DH was really happy about the internet.  He's been yapping about it all evening.  He feels like we're "settled" just because he can check email and pay bills etc.  The boxes everywhere are driving me nuts.  I think even with the best intentions, there is no way you could call us minimalists....we've got a lot of stuff.  It becomes real apparent when you heave it all in and out of a truck over a two day period and then spend a week trying to shove it all to the right places.

DDs are really wanting a cat, and tonight we had to run into Wal-mart and get some visine for DH, whose eyes are also bothering him because of the pollen, and there were some kittens hanging out in the basket return.  Wild little devils yowling at us.  My oldest wanted to catch one and take it home so bad she couldn't stand it, but they wouldn't come to us.  I asked what they would name it if they caught it and they promptly answered "Wal-kitty".  I think they got the idea from a friend of mine who used to feed a stray cat that hung out at the dumpster at Whataburger; he called the cat "What-a-kitty".

Well, the sky is getting lighter in the east and I'm planning out my day's work.  One job is to finish putting up the stuff from the boxes in our room... I can't find any of MY clothes other than what I had on and what was in the laundry basket on the day we started moving.  Strangely enough, DH has everything from his dress suit to overalls.  At this point, I can't remember where my stuff is even packed. ???  Anyway, as soon as I can fly through that, I'm headed out to the garden.  We're getting onions and potatoes in today if it is the last thing I do... nearly a month later than it should be.   It is supposed to be 86 degrees today!  The garden beds are so grown up, it's going to take a bit of work to get  them cleaned out enough to plant anything... grass was taller than waist-high.  Raked leaves and dead grass out of the first one a few days ago while the big girls pulled the baby around in the wagon, and the piles for the compost bin are now bigger than the garden bed itself.  Oh, and my aunt and grandma are dropping by today to see the place, so I at least need to clear a few boxes from the living room.  Sunroom already looks pretty good.

OK, I know I already posted this morning, but I had to drop back in and say it is a glorious morning.  At 7 o'clock, I went outside barefoot to hang out the laundry.  The grass and dirt were cool, but not cold.  The air is warm and the sun is shining.  The birds were singing and the dogs wanted me to play with them.  Hang the housework, I'm spending the day outdoors!  I don't care if the house is a wreck when Grandma and Aunt drop by... they'll understand why you couldn't possibly spend a day like today inside.  (Best part of all is that you don't have that closed-in feeling like in the city when you're outdoors...no neighbors giving you funny looks through the slats of the stupid privacy fence, no opening the blinds to see the neighbor just right across the way sitting at the table having her morning cup of coffee.  So, if I wanted to run around outside in my PJs, it doesn't even matter. )  In fact, as soon as I find my box of curtains, the blinds are coming down.  I didn't even close them last night.  I think the old lady who lived here just turned them open during the day and never actually raised them.... there were six years' worth of dust on them!  I'll try to take some pics of our place today to post.

::) Of course there is, Glenn.  The woods are REALLY thick around.  I've found at least two pecan trees so far, which is a very good thing.  Those are the native ones, not including the one that was planted in the back yard.

I ended up giving up before I got the garden bed completely cleaned out.  Allergies were killing me, and with 30MPH winds there wasn't a lot I could do about it.  So,  we got a little over 1/3 of the first garden bed cleaned out.  My help kept running off to play in the water because it was hot, and my supervisor kept crawling off her quilt to share her finds with the dog, and while out in the grass, she'd find all sorts of interesting things to stick in her mouth.  Took pictures but now can't find the cable to download them. ???  It's probably in one of the boxes lying around here that is marked "Open soon because only God really knows what's in here."  Every day I like this place better... as I'm cleaning off the garden beds, etc., I realize just how pretty it is going to be if we get a little rain.  There is a raised garden bed with little steps going up to it (it surrounds the well) and right now it is full of daffodils, and there are other flowers making their way up now too. At one end of that particular flower garden, there is a cluster of four postoaks that have grown together, and my daughter is already wanting me to put a swing in the tree there.  The owner also told me about an asparagus bed that is just north of the vineyard.  I haven't seen any signs of the asparagus coming up, so I am thinking that it may have been so dry this winter that they aren't doing well.  It is supposed to be in the 80s again today, so it'll probably be another bad allergy day, but gotta love it.

It is, Glenn.  It is still taking a while for it to really sink in that this is really our place.  I keep having to pinch myself now and then to see if I wake up.  Came home from the farm supply yesterday with guinea keets.  I didn't mean to... they sort of gave me the pitiful look and I had to take them.

That's great, HG!  I guess it was worth the wait & all the hassles!

I went to get the eggs from our chickens & saw one was dead - didn't see any obvious damage to her - then when I gathered the eggs, one was covered with blood - guess she died while giving birth - poor thing  :(
Title: Re: tomorrow's the day
Post by: Homegrown Tomatoes on March 08, 2009, 07:59:47 PM
Tragedy struck last night.  One of the keets died, so my oldest was really distraught.  I was kind of surprised because she's always been so matter-of-fact about death that it was somewhat of a relief to see her have a "normal" reaction for a 6 YO kid.  It meant we had to have a funeral and the whole nine yards... if it had been a chicken, I think she would have been mad, not necessarily sad... she looks at chickens as a source of food, so she would have been more like, "Darn, there goes the eggs!"  However, I think she thinks the guineas are pets.

That's strange about the chicken, Sassy.  Poor thing. I don't think I have ever heard of anything like that... gotta wonder if she had something else going on that caused it?  I tried to send you some pics the other day but was having trouble attaching them to the email.  I did finally find the cord to download the pics from the camera, just in time for the battery to run down on the camera and now I can't find the charger for it!!!

It is starting (oh, so gradually) to feel a little more homey.  The kids' room is all unpacked and put away and looks good.  Our room is total chaos.  Everything else needs work, too, and I'm still really wanting to get my garden ready.  Tiller wouldn't start after not being used for so long, so finally gave up this afternoon getting it done.... should've just kept at it by hand instead of wasting time messing with the tiller and it would have been done by now.

I'm sure you have your hands full with 3 kids, one only an infant, moving, getting everything in order.  That's one thing I don't like to do, is to move!  You want to get everything back into order right away & drives you just about nuts.   d*

We planted some more fruit trees - we now have 2 apples, 2 cherries, 2 pomegranate & 1 (4 varieties on one tree) plum.  We already had a 4way plum, 3 orange, 1 lime, 2 apricot & 1 peach tree & 2 blueberry bushes.  Glenn planted some rhubarb & we both planted a lot of cabbage, cauliflower & brussel sprout plants.  We still have lots of swiss chard, carrots, onions, lettuce, parsnips & celery.  My daffodils are blooming, the fruit trees that were already planted are blooming, everything is green - really a beautiful time of the year!

I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of the baby & your other girls & your place when you find all the stuff you need  :)

We had guinea keets and about the second night they were in the chicken pen in a cat carrier a bear broke in and got the box, tore it opened and ate them all.  Third night I shot the bear.

Ours our in the kitchen. ::)  No bears there.  Unfortunately, there is another one that was pasting up and not too perky.  I got it cleaned up and warmed up, but it is just sprawled out there under the lamp and not doing much more than breathing.  I really hope that it makes it.  He will still stand up if I touch him, and open his eyes, but won't scramble away like the others, but not because he doesn't want to... he just doesn't seem to have the energy to.   ???  I tried to feed a little sugar water, but doesn't seem like that's helping.  Changed the bulb in the lamp from a 40 watt to a 100 watt in hopes that that would warm them a little better.  I wasn't thinking and had doors and windows open today with the wind whistling through the house (it was pretty, but a little cool for the guineas, I think.)

Sassy, you hit the nail on the head.  It drives me absolutely nuts to live in chaos.  I so wish that I could get it all done now.  We didn't even visit a local church this morning because I was hoping to get some more stuff in from the garage while DH was here to help me.  We ended up messing around in the garden more than we should have... wanted to get taters and onions done before that cold front gets here on Tuesday or Wednesday.  Time change kind of messed the kids up... big girls were OK, but the baby wouldn't go to sleep tonight until just  a few minutes ago.  Argh.

Unpacking seems to be in super-slow motion this time around.... the garden is slowly but surely taking shape.  This fall it will be even better if I have anything to do with it.  And look out next spring!  However, I have decided that my allergies are most certainly indoor allergies, and not outdoor, except the cedar pollen which has been awful so far this year.  The carpet must go soon!   It is ancient and killing us with whatever stuff is in it!  I can live with the slab better than the carpet.  It must go!  Still haven't even gotten our bedroom unpacked all the way, and homeschool is going very slowly and difficult because of not having everything in its place yet.

Uh, hello?  Where are the photos already?

Coming home with animals can be a dangerous thing if you don't have the facilities already set up.  My wife has gotten really good at getting chickens before the coop is built.  Then it always puts crazy stress on me to drop everything else I'm doing (that she has been begging me to do and I have just barely been able to start) to build a chicken coop.  And most of the time we don't have the money for the chicken wire, let alone the lumber when it's needed!
