Title: Solar Air Box Materials ?
Post by: MountainDon on February 17, 2009, 01:37:13 PM
Does anyone have a good source for sheets of glazing materials? I'm after some sort of plastic, not sure what exactly. This would be for a hot air collector. I haven't started to look; haven't bought any of this sort for 23-24 years.

I don't want to use glass because of falling branches, elk and bears.

you have falling elk and bears ?!?!?

plexiglas is tough easy to use and not too expensive

there used to be this polycarbonate stuff that looked like a bunch of square chambers viewed from the edge -- was recomended for greenhouses IIRC

Just did a quick search on Jemez Mountains

looks beautiful

The only place in NM I've been was Las Cruces NM (flew into El Paso)

Worked on some lab equipment at ConAgra where they make chilli powder

much prettier up in the Jemez Mountains

Hey Don... let's visit about this sometime.  I've been thinking of doing this same thing.  I was thinking about trying to make a metal insulated interior, with baffles riveted in place.

Is this for your cabin or your house?

This a cabin thing. I'm thinking of placing a 4 x 10 or 12 foot air box on the south wall and powering the fan with a small solar panel. When the sun shines the motor runs. Probably a thermostat in the box too so it doesn't blow if the air is too cool. I'm thinking it might work to keep the interior a little warmer when we're not there to stoke the stove.

I built a 2x10ft one in the eighties and had it warming the garage/workshop here at home. It worked well enough, but could have been a little bigger.

I'll be happy to get together and knash out ideas with you.

do a search for Glenn's Passive/Agressive Solar Heater...  that was somewhat on the same line you are thinking of...  but he used the greenhouse heat...

Mother Earth news had the window solar heater design also.  No blower necessary for it.
