Title: Loft floor joists
Post by: scw on July 01, 2005, 07:39:31 AM
I am new to the forum and am building a 16 x 20 timber framed cabin in northern VT.  I am putting in a half loft and need to span 10 feet.  Would native sawn 2x8s be enough, or should I go to 2x10s.  2x8s would be perfect as they would sit flush to the 6x8s on which they would be hanging.  Thanks for the help.

A solid 2x8 can span at least 13' at 16" o/c and 11' at 24" centers. For a 10' span 2x6 is commonly used.
