Title: Open Carry Laws?!?!?
Post by: cordwood on December 14, 2008, 10:13:28 PM
I just learned yesterday that Arkansas is NOT an Open Carry state [shocked] [shocked] [shocked]
I haven't carried a side arm since we moved from Cali. a few years ago when I sold my Blackhawk .357. Now the wife wants us to get into Cowboy Mounted Shooting and that got me looking for more side arms when much to my dismay I learned it is illegal to pack a loaded weapon in the open in Arkansas!!!!!!!! d* d*
That is NOT FUNNY AT ALL n* n* n* So now I guess it's shell out a pot full of money and get a CCW permit and try to get this stupid law repealed [waiting]
I guess it just prooves that you don't have to be out of the loop long to get Ollie Northed :-\ :-\ ;)

I lived there for a long time and never knew that!

I'm guessing that all those hillbillies with rifles in the backs of their trucks are exempt due to some sort of vehicle clause?

Your right as shocking as it seems.

http://opencarry.org/ar.html

I'd get my ccp and join a good lobby group for change.

This site may help. I've never looked at that site and I have issues of Virginia's group, they do offer a lot of guidance as well as a strong voice in Government.

New Mexico has an extended domain law which effectively makes your vehicle an extension of your home.

I am going to get real proactive real fast around here!!!! I know most of the local law and several wannabe politicians in Little Rock and I will wear out a printer trying to get this RECTIFIED! That is Un-Constitutional isn't it?  What type of government has taken over there?

Opencarrty.org is owned by Virginians. Between the Va chapter and VCDL http://www.vcdl.org/ we have a very powerful lobby. There are problems with OCDO  though. Most of the active members are from Northern Va, which is part of Va in name only, and their wants, needs and goals are much different than Rural Va.

Even then, we all seem to pull together on a political level so whatever differences we have, are moot.

SC does not permit open carry either but it is a shall issue CCW state. I am not a fan of the open carry as it alows a potential threat to know you are armed and may put you in more danger because of that fact. I prefer to know I have it while no one else does. SC does allow loaded in the glove box or console so that is a plus but I live right on the SC/NC border and in NC you have to have it in plane site which makes things a bit tense at traffic stops.

There are pro's and con's of both Brian.
It also depends on practical applications.

Open carry is faster. Period. It is inappropriate in some places and I dislike it in heavy crowds.
My favorite Concealed carry method is an American Derringer Corp 45LC/410 loaded with 000Buck .410, in my jacket pocket.

I do agree with some reservations about concealed. I used to teach self defense with a number of weapons including a handgun. I always preached that you should never threaten or even display your weapon. The attacker should be down before he ever realizes your armed.

I like our county.  17000 people. No incorporated cities.

"Open Car Carry    Firearms may be openly carried in cars in unincorporated areas unless the county has made open carry illegal, or, pursuant to a CA open carry permit issued (and apparently valid only in) a county with a population of less than 200,000 persons."

At least livable.

agree that open carry is quicker and like you said there are pro's and con's to both. I usually carry a Kahr K40 in a IWB but as I am guessing you know it takes many years and a lot of practice to be able to draw efficiently. I guess a lot will depend on the situations one thinks they may encounter and personal preference. For me day to day it is IWB butt if the world ever goes south I bet youd find me with the drop leg on :)

Do you still do any teaching ? I have been to a few classes around the country and am always looking for new ones to try out. Hopefully going to get to go out to Tactical Responce this spring I have wanted to take their fighting rifle class for some time.

Sorry, no. I don't teach anymore Brian. For one thing, I've gotten too old and my health is going quickly, but I'm also a case study in conflicting beliefs. One of my students was involved in a knife fight and nearly killed the other fellow. I felt I could teach technique but I couldn't teach how to walk away. They were both drinking and it should never have happened.

I've carried in some of the worst places in SoCal and I never had a problem with the bad guys knowing I'm packing. If you pay close enough attention to the people you can tell who is packing and who ain't so hiding it only fools the dumb ones and makes it hard for you to be first, And second place in a gun fight ain't cool.
If you dig far enough into the hard facts open carry states have over the years had far less problems with gun violence than restricted states.
And Glen; I lived in Riverside and San Bernadino Counties, Rode with CHP & Deputy Sheriffs and my side arm was never questioned, Not one time. But reading the law now I don't think that would fly anymore :-\

Yeah -- funny how the criminals do what they want but a good citizen who may stop a crime will get busted.
