Is it just looking like it may be a good idea to the writer, or have events been steered to make it look that way so the writer would feel it was the wise thing to do.

I'd say the internet is just one "crack" in this "problem"- more to come. Certainly not in our lifetimes but I have always assumed this would be inevitable.
