Does anyone have a pic of a typical framing of a wall that is going to be set up for a fireplace. I am trying to figure out what is in the wall without
opening it up. The chimney had to come out years ago due to the Loma Prieta earthquake. City came by and said take it down or have it rebuilt by a professional. I removed the chimney but left the base. Put a plywood panel
over the gap where the chimney was, but I don't remember any of the detail.
I am thinking of putting in some kind of gas type firebox but will need to
set up the flue. Any ideas on how to do this? My understanding is that some kind of doublewalled sheetmetal flue is required, but that is all I know. Any ideas are greatfully welcome.

If just a gas fireplace, the dealer will have the proper vent pipe for it. Usually double walled gas vent, like on a water heater but bigger. I doubt there is much more than a support pan and strap braces till you get to the top, then a roof jack/flashing etc as reqd.
You generally need 1" clear around the double-walled flue too. They also call this a "Type B" vent. You can buy pieces and they just snap together. You generally have to have a cap too which has to terminate 2 feet above anything within a 10 foot radius.
