I have a couple of old Coleman gas lanterns that don't work anymore and was looking for some instructions for repairing them. Does anyone have any information regarding this?
Des, I've found two major problems with Colmen lanterns. The biggest is they get clogged up. Sometimes you can take them apart and clean the delivery circuit, sometimes you need to buy new orifices.
The other is the flapper valve in the pump. Replace it.
I've never seen one that a good cleaning and new mantles couldn't fix.

I've got one for you homey. I had it in the back of the truck and ran over it with the ATV when I loaded it. >:( I don't think a cleaning will help ;D

;D Nope, that's beyond the scope of a good cleaning! Kind of like the time my dad ran over his false teeth and when he took them in to the dentist and told her he'd broken them, she said, "Hand them here and I'll fix them." He took them out of his pocket and untied them in his handkerchief like a pocket full of pebbles... she shook her head and told him there was no hope.
Most good sporting goods stores still sell all the parts for them. The last time I rebuilt the generator on mine the kit had instructions with it. (that I am sure I threw away before I read them [crz])

The generator is the tube coming off the top of the valve that runs into the head with the mantles attached. I am not sure how to troubleshoot one to determine what part isn't working. I find replacement pumps available and of course new silk mantles. I took one lantern apart yesterday in hopes of finding something plugged up somewhere but then I realized I didn't know exactly what I was looking at so I was hoping to find some detailed information.

It looks like for all intents and purposes that is what it is Peter. There is a 5/16 threaded piece on the top of the one I removed that could be an orfice.
Just thinking about your lantern makes my thumb ache [scared] Hurry up before it goes out, Boy what I would have give for a good flashlight back then ::)
If your lamp is old enough to have the leather pump seal a little 3in1 oil may help it out also a big problem that often gets over looked is the gasket in the filler cap, If it pumps up and holds pressure the generator is dirty and sometimes just turning the handle all the way in & out a few times will get you going again for a while.
If you call the folks at old town they can usually fix you right up with what you need. ;)
