Title: Opening day of the regular Deer season...for everyone but me

Dad had surgery again and it didn't go as well as we'd like. So .... Jane and I were back home again today. I had some time to kill while he was doing tests so we went back to the lamp shop and got two more oil lamps. I took a few pictures while out.

A Mennonite buggy. At one time, you could se a line of them miles long.

All things considered it looked like it was a nice day in the Shenandoah Valley.  Our season is Next Monday. Va is always a week ahead.

It drizzled in the valley all day John, but it poured in Hanover. I think the farm took a hit too. Kind of a dreary day in the hospital.

The lamp shop is trying to cut their inventory before tax time. I got two more Aladdin's. They are the ones on the ends. The one in the middle is a Rolex (spelling) and works much like an Aladdin.

A quick safety note.. ??? Aladdin's put out a LOT more heat than a traditional oil lamp. Thankfully, I needed to paint the ceiling anyway, c*

Well I am covered in blood & guts,....But it's still kind of a feel good story! While working on a friends atv she gets a call from her husbands cousin (this is Arkansas!) who is 51 and she has shot her first deer,.....Her ailing father is with her but his oxy. bottle makes it hard for him to help. So here comes the cavalry,.....sort of,........ She just needs help loading it,........Turns out she needs FINDING it :o :o :o, A half mile drive in the dark we conclude that we have past it some how. She asks; Did anyone see a feeder? Yes about 100 yards from where we started!,.....Oh that's where I shot him,.......I'll just turn around....NO NO NO NO NO not here go up past the CLIFF and THEN turn around,...Oh,..Ok,........There he is, Whew :P, Load him & back to the camp,.......Back at camp we hoist him on the scale and he's 120 pounds on the nose and and a 4&3 7 pointer!...Who's gonna clean him?..............................................................I didn't shoot him, I only came to help load him!.................................................Any body got a knife? ???....No I mean a REAL knife >:(,.......................Anyway our neighbor friend field dressed him for her cousin with a pocket knife and an axe they found by the old wood pile and only got 125 pounds of blood and guts on me the deer holder! ??? ??? ???
Moral of the story!?!?!?!? In deer season ALWAYS have a good knife on you!!!!! [slap]  The little bit in return will make good deer chili [hungry] [hungry] [hungry]

It is hunting season here and as usual the people here shoot anything that moves. They have shot all the does and fawns through out the year, so now there are few deer and even fewer turkey. A neighbor told us that he will shoot anything whether it is legal or not. Now I am hearing people saying there are very few deer. The ignorance of the people here is something else. I get really mad at the people around here. They love to kill, just to be killing. Deer, turkey, woodpeckers, anything that moves.  >:(

Southernsis---where are you located? Sounds like some angry people. If you're not going to use what you
kill for consumption what is the point? I would certainly watch my back.

I live in Arkansas. They are angry all the time. You can hear shooting going on all day and night. The way around here to solve things is to get in a fight or something worse. We had a neighbor that was arrested for stalking, threats, mail threats, carring a concealed weapon. This woman is nuts. We have seen fist fights in the grocery store. We try to avoid the people here. If they don't get in a fight with you, they will try to steal what you have.

Yea ssis,
I too have been considering buying some land down south and Arkansas was on my list of possibilities.
What town are you speaking of? This is so discouraging.

Evening Shade The people here are also very racist. I was not use to this. I came from the west coast and things are very different here. It is a beautiful place to live, but we stay to our selves. Bull Shoals/ Norfork is a good area. The Mountain Home area is different. There are a lot of people there that have moved from other states. Baxter county is also a wet county, where Sharp, Fulton, Izard and Independence are dry counties. That is why more people have moved there.

Ssis,
Didn't they have a tv show Evening Shade in the 1990's? I wonder if the town was like you were talking
about then or just has gotten a bad crowd who is sending it down the tubes. Thanks for the info. I wouldn't
want to find out this stuff after I move there. I will definitely consider another place. Where are the law
enforcement to control this unlawful behavior?

Yes, there was a show called Evening Shade filmed here. This is a rural area where everyone is related to everyone else. If you just stay to yourself you can avoid talking to people.

In many places law enforcement runs the organized crime.  A new Sheriff here nearly lost his job for trying to shut down some drug dealers.  In 1980 one lost his life - the trail of dirt went to the DOJ in DC and the case has never been closed - solved or properly investigated.

I live in the same sort of place just a few valley's West of Evening Shade and I love it, I know most of the law here and never have to worry about anything. I have half of the Sheriffs dept. deputy's cell#s on my phone and the wife is good friends with most of the 911 operators. When the tornado hit Clinton there were people who had fought amongst themselves for years that came together like no place I had ever seen.
These people are different that's for sure but I would put the worst of these against the best of ones where we have lived before. Even though I am a West Coast transplant they treat my like I have lived here all my life. When that girl needed help last night there was no long discussion, It was just where are you and I will be there in a minute. That's the way they are here. ;)
Van Buren County is a dry county and that makes it hard on an old beer drinker like me but I adjust and wouldn't live anywhere else.
There is no shortage of deer in Arkansas and if someone talks about poaching one I have the Game Wardens number and it becomes a nonproblem n* n*.  We have Deer, Bear, Turkey, Squirrel and just a little north of here there are even Elk. Wildlife abounds here in Ar. It is a beautiful place, I would suggest you look for yourself w*

In preparation of the coming week my son and I did manage to walk the boundries of the property.  What was accessable on a 4 wheeler was done partly.  Installed approximately 20-25 new signs and looked for deer signs as we covered the ground.  Seems that trails and droppings are plentiful but we have yet to see any new scrapes.  There is usually deer visible but not that many bucks.  Couple of pets within rock throwing distance of the house but lack the legal length on the horns.  Several neighbors have commented on a 6 & 8 pt seen lying in our field but we haven't seen it.  If they can survive the spotlighters for another week we'll see if they are still around.

Thanks cordwood. Glad you found you heaven. But my only problem is I hunt animals with a camera not a gun. Actually, its not a problem at all for me. Maybe your game wardens could straighten up unlawful hunting in Evening Shade? What a way to keep the wildlife balance in check in your state for you and future generations in Arkansas.

Karnif, I hunt animals with a camera and a gun. Hunting a fact of life. While I don't condone unethical or illegal hunting, I am a great supporter of hunting. One sure way to NOT get along with locals is to go there to be away from whatever you want to get away from, and try to change your new area to YOUR way of thinking. You either need to accept local traditions and customs, or go back where you came from.

If you don't like hunting, don't hunt....but don't condemn those that do.

Thanks for asking HT.  He's not doing well. For a long time, no one was sure which of us would go first but when  Mom died, he just quit. He can't walk more than a few feet, has had a bad heart for 20 couple years, has cancer which is inoperable but slow. That's causing some bleeding which makes him anemic and now they found a new mass which they removed last week. The Doctors said radiation was mandatory.

His mental condition seemed to go all at once and there isn't an obvious reason for it.

He has diabetes and it causes a lot of problems also.
He's just wearing out!

Peter, I hope things go well for your Dad. At this point in time I have lived longer than any of the males in my traced lineage.

Re the Aladdin lamps... are these the kerosene burning ones with a mantle?

Thanks Don!
Yes, they are the kerosene lamps with a mantle. The Mennonites still use them and this shop is Mennonite owned and run. The first two a model 12 which is the flagship of the company. The second one is a Washington Drape, clear glass model.
Both give out 60 watts worth of light.

Nice lamps. Do they work well on reg kerosene? I was once told they need clear lamp oil... that kero causes some type of problem.

Managed hunting programs are all that keep the wildlife healthy here. With very few predatory animals left in the wild animals like deer and turkey would over populate the area and result in sick & diseased animals. Like it or not some hunting is necessary.
I have lived in quite a few states and I don't recall one that has NO HUNTING signs on the welcome to sign. Arkansas is not the only state that hunts. ::)
I grew up in Southern California and it was nothing like 90210, The first day of dove season sounded like a John Wayne movie! But I also guided people who wanted to photograph wildlife to the quail guzzles (Man made watering holes in the hills) so they could shoot some up close. Now those places are almost gone completely, Not from hunting but from prolific breeding humans building house after house and taking away the natural habitat and spraying the land with pesticides so they wont have bugs.
When you see a hunter you see someone destroying something, When a hunter sees you cutting, clearing and building he/she sees you as the destroyer.

Peter, sorry that this got off the topic. I do not hate where I live, I just do not like how the mind set is. Back to hunting, I drove 2 miles up to the gas station yesterday and there was nothing laying in the road. On my return, in the middle of the road was a deer that had been killed. It was a doe and who ever just took the choicest cuts and threw the rest in the road.
I like your lamps. Grew up on a farm in the middle of now where and had to rely on those kind of lamps. Power was always going out.
Sorry to hear about your dad. My mother is 98 and just fell and broke her hip. Hope things get better.

Too bad about your dad, Peter.  The old one way ticket will only take us so far and some of us may be ready to get off before the train grinds to a halt if the ride has been bumpy.  I wish for the best that it can be.

Great pix, Peter!  I also wish the best for your dad...  I know how hard it is to have sick parents - I miss mine a lot...  it's hard not being able to talk to them when I want to - or show them our progress on our place etc.

Yesterday I went down to the valley for a birthday party for my 6 y/o granddaughter.   Then visited my friend - she's 89 now & has been like a 2nd mother - I call her my "spiritual" mother as I got to know her & her husband really well after I 1st became a Christian.  She is so tiny...  probably the most loving, generous person I have ever met in my life!  Right now she's in a rehab home - has severe heart disease, diverticulosis, broke her hip & wrist last year & just hasn't been the same; has been in & out of the hospital this past month.  She's always been such a go-getter - it is sad to see her so weak, but I know she is ready to go "home"...
