He made some good movies.
Also was a very good car racer, several SCCA championships.
He was also a very quiet philanthropist, having given away over 175 million thru the "Newman's Own" brand of products and the "Hole in the Wall" camps for children with terminal diseases. He was a rare breed....one of those that roamed freely......lived proud.....and found the time to give a little bit back.

He made a movie in my home town in Lincoln City, Oregon. "Sometimes A Great Notion" originally but renamed later to something else. Not a real great movie but OK and local interest.

Yes - that was it, I'm pretty sure. It was on the Siletz river - An old logging river in Oregon. The house was called the Stamper Residence, and My daughter in laws father worked on it as a carpenter.
We may be the only two people here who saw it. ??? Did you?

He was quiet, understated in many things he did I believe.
I mentioned car racing... he became interested in it after a movie role. He raced in SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) events. He was very good behind the wheel. It helped that he could buy the best of equipment, but he was also a talented driver. One thing I (and others) noted was he insisted on simply be listed as P. Newman on any race information. That's what he has painted on the car door.

Yup --- the whole arm... that was the high point if I recall correctly.
About 5 miles or so from where I went to high school. Parents of a kid I went to school with owned the boat yard and docks west of there.

About Some Times a Great Notion anybody read the book? Great story by Ken Kesey. One of the best knock down all out brawls I every read about. Also there was a part where there are 3 stories going at once if I remember right? I thought it was pretty neat? I saw the movie also, I thought both Henry Fonda and Paul were missed cast, they weren't tough enough for the roles, the Stampers were a tough bunch bet the could have taken out a bar full of Hells Angles and not broken a sweat. Lee Marvin may have pulled off the old man's part like the book?

I didn't read the book, but you are right.
That was done in my hometown and we are much, much tougher than those actors.
Paul was a bit wimpy using the chainsaw, but for an actor I think he did quite well. He did not cuss the saw out using a 2 minute long blue streak of expletives and obscenities as a true Oregonian would have.

He says "it's ok for a novice, but it must be accompanied by a 2 minute rant of x#p#!!! daisy chained together & you will know whether it's sufficient when the dogs go running for cover... :-\ " The last rant he remembers is when his Arrow stapler messed up for the 1000th time after fixing multiple times, so he started up his 100,000 pound hydraulic press & smashed it flat so he could never even attempt to use it again! I was an innocent bystander & the dogs went running...
