Title: Rafter support follow up: Don't laugh
Post by: rakuz66 on September 16, 2008, 02:46:23 PM
This is for the amusement and consideration for Peg and Glen.  Broke down and called my Engineer over the double 2x12 beam I ran under the rafters.  She said that she stood by her original thoughts that it was ok without it.  She also said that I need to be careful because the beam seems overspanned and could therefore be " pulling" on the rafters, not supporting them.  I didn't ask her if I should take it out or not, because I knew she was getting pissed off at me.  What do you think?? Leave it or take it out?

I had that same thought about the weight factor , I didn't post it back then but I did think it. Guess I should have I'd look like  genius now!

I'd take it out.

I'm taking the dbl 2x12 beam out.  From then on it looks like I can leave it alone, or use (2) 1 3/4 x 14 LVL beams.   ???

That would be unadviseable, IF your going to insist on putting a beam in there leave the one thats there up , and post down off of it to the double joist. That way your bring them into the mix , and making the whole works more like a WAY OVER built truss.

This area become attic space doesn't it? Gets covered with a ceiling in other words.

Just got back from camp.  Took the 2x12 beam out and covered up the ceiling w/ t&g pine.
Just curious Peg, why would putting in (2) 14" lvl's be unadvisable???

Well for one they'd weight more than the 2x12's so you'd just have been adding more weight , UNLESS  you did some other type of posting and or truss webbing.

Peg, IF i did put it in, I would certainly dig 4ft deep footers and run adequate posting to and from the lvl's.  5" bearing I'm told, so that would be an extra 2x4 in front of the wall studs.   d*
By the way, thanks for realizing I'm a maniac.
