Just got back from working on my camp and was hoping for some input. Some of you may remember me and my roofing questions before (Overkill :) ).
Here goes.
Snow load 70
dead load 10
roof pitch 5/12
Half of roof line is vaulted, other half is tied w/ ceiling joists and rafters.
Roof run 11ft ( that's from wall plate to ridge ), it's 22 ft overall
Roof length 16 ft. ( that's left to right )
I have 4 beams ( dbl 2x10 ) at plate level every 4ft holding walls together in vaulted area.
My question? I placed a dbl 2x12x16 ft (SPF #2)underneath the rafters in the vaulted area at their halfway point (6ft) which runs the total roof length of 16 ft ,the beam rests on 2x4 posts that will be solid to some new piers. So, I guess my question is whether or not a dbl 2x12 is sufficient to run 16ft underneath some 2x8 rafters??

I'm sure it's over-kill. Nice photo Rak ::) Was it a late night / last minute photo?
Late night cell phone photo. I plan on parking my truck up there. ;)

18,000 K on the front end so about 9 K per tire.
:)
Not that big Peg :o Do you think those doubled up 2x12's are sufficient in 16 ft? I made the decision because when i had thoughts of putting in a ridge beam, the engineer said (3) 2x12 as a ridge for 16 ft. So I figured 2 would be fine for rafter support along with the 4 beams at plate level. What do you think?

If I'm following / understanding you right , this "beam" is to help support your rafters for snow load , more of a strong back , under 2x8 rafters that are 12' in length as you say the beam is at there 1/2 way point of 6'.
If thats true / right I think your forum name should be "Over-kill x 100!!"
As I said I think your more than fine, of course I could be not following you right , whats your engineer buddy saying? Did he say you even needed this beam?
If I'm following you right I think your into excess and are wasting your money on stuff thats really , really not needed.

Peg, You are following me right. I put this 2x12 beam in for rafter support for snow load. It is a vaulted area. I wasn't satisfied with 2x8 rafters 12 ft in length at 19.2 on ctr with a 70 lb snow load, so I put this "2x12 beam" in there for x-tra rafter support. I'm afraid to even bring this to my engineer's attention. :-[
You put on a metal roof didn't you? With a 5/12 that should shed snow if the weight become s factor it should shear for under it's own weight.
I know you guys in the NE area , your in NY state IRRC do get that heavy water filled snow in the late winter. I call that type snow "heart attack" snow as I remember a lot of folk back in R.I. having one :o shoveling out from those late Feb / March snow storms.
Why are you afraid to ask you engineer ? Isn't he a friend doing Pro Bono design for you? Does he call you Overkill + 100 as well rofl
Can't afford to put metal on this yr, so that's another reason I put in rafter support. I hope you mean the snow would shear under it's own weight?? And yes, I think the engineer would, well I know she thinks I'm crazy.

#1: So new comp / asphalt shingles?
#2: Yes the snow would sheer / shed off. My writting abialilties may be lacking :-[ I find it hard some times to be clear , to many words , or the wrong ones , yes the snow will shed off even on comp shingles unless you get ice daming.
#3: I can see why d* rofl rofl ;)
