I wonder seeing our government will do nothing, if citizens can go forward with a class action suit against the countries who's citizens drain on our tax paid resources.....

Cost of trying and getting them to agree to comply when we don't have any real power over a sovereign country - (except to blow them up if they have no major way to fight back)-  would likely stop much progress.

Heck -- we can't even get Bush and Cheney sent back to the Hague.

Well they won my heart when this was said

According to our Constitution, we have a secular state. Our laws are made by the Australian Parliament. If those are not your values, if you want a country which has Sharia law or a theocratic state, then Australia is not for you. This is not the kind of country where you would feel comfortable if you were opposed to democracy, parliamentary law, independent courts and so I would say to people who don't feel comfortable with those values there might be other countries where they'd feel more comfortable with their own values or beliefs.

I think it started off with "Shove Off".

We have a better than that, "Constitution"  if we can just get the stains from Bush wiping his ass with it, off of it.

I am really divided and torn on this issue.

Certainly he made his choices in life and is now dealing with the repercussions of them.  Being here 11 years he had ample opportunity to get legal and be a contributing member of the country.  He choose not to.  He was working, no hint of him being on welfare or the like.  He had a brain aneurism, which is not something he could have predicted or avoided, it was not his fault as I understand that condition (I could be wrong but it wasnt like he overdosed on drugs or got shot while robbing someone).  He also is in a coma, so we don't have any idea what his wishes are, he may be just fine with the idea of going back home.  I think the hospital is acting very fairly in this, he is stabilized and they found long term care for him.  I don't wish him any harm or bad will.  Jesus was pretty clear about how we should treat the sick, the needy and the elderly...

Now, I do have a problem with the rest of the story.  It seems it is the mexican government that is fighting this and does not want him returned.  It also seems his relatives have hired a lawyer to sue the hospital to keep him there.  If his family is soo concerned for him they need to pay the bill.  end of story on that.  In the US we have a safety net that is supposed to help people who fall through the cracks.  Some people abuse it sure but it's there.  Mexico is a vastly wealthy country.  Their major cities mirror our own, huge industries.  What they do not have is a middle class, the wealth is not distributed at all.  Something like 5% own 95% of the countries wealth.  They also do not have a safety net for their citizens, the safety net is to give them a map north and say good luck.  Its policy.   That is the significant driving force in this mess in my opinion.

We have done our duty with this man. Yes he is here illegally which I take issue with. Let's say he was here on a vacation. We still acted neighborly and as a Good Samaritan. He got the best immediate care and is now stable for transport. If his family can afford to pay for his long term care, then fine if not then he needs to be taken care of by his country.

PLUS....This person is in a Hospital bed. There is a Hospital Bed Shortage in this country. He needs to be in a facility that offers long term care and not a Hospital. This is one less bed that a community has to take care of immediate illness.

We've done more than our share, now it's time for his country to do their share...
