Title: Anyone Use Alltel for Internet??
Post by: MountainDon on July 11, 2008, 01:04:58 AM
Since Alltel has a tower on a mountain about a mile from our mountain ridge property they would seem to be one logical way to obtain internet service up there. The only other way would be one of the dish internet providers. The dish drawback is the tall trees all over the place; except for the "solar site" which alas, is 300 feet from the cabin. Alltel however comes in strong on the cell phone... roaming as we don't utilize them for our cell provider.

Anyhow, does anyone have any Alltel data experience?

Thanks.

Don,
I use a similar Verizon service and it works very well most places. The big hole is at my primary residence. I am one tower short of having enough signal here at home so I am still using dial-up here. I use it in my office and when I am up north. I hav used it in Flagstaff and Yuma with no complaints. When up on the mountain I have plugged in my laptop to my solar power and used the Verizon device successfully, surrounded by hills and trees.
I know, it's not Alltel but if one provider can make it work another should be able to do so as well. It costs me $60/month for a cost comparison. Verizon gives you a week to try it out and if it doesn't work for you you are off the hook with the committment. They have been very good to work with.  [cool]

Thanks desdawg. Good info. Alltel's price is the same. Two year contract. I don't think there'll be a problem as the phone connection is good in most spots along the ridge. Their modems also have provision for an external antenna which might be nice. I'm just thinking of it right now... if I had a connection up there at present I might not get all the work to be done quite so fast.  ;D

We have AT&T - there's a hole at our residence in the valley & also at our cabin in the mountains...  :-\ so we have to have dial-up at both places & have DSL in the cabin...  our phone bills aren't cheap...  we're paying about $270-280 mo for cell, land lines & DSL  :o  pretty expensive to be hooked up...

The dial up are local phone companies & then we have MCI for long distance - that's our best deal - $25 + taxes etc - approx $30 mo which covers both places for nationwide calling...  I had to wheel & deal for that a few years ago - talked with a supervisor & she gave us a promotion that had already expired as she didn't want to lose our business.   :)
