Title: Gettin a Jump on Father's Day...
Post by: MountainDon on May 17, 2008, 12:02:37 AM
... and my birthday too!

Our son came over to have me change oil, rotate tires and install new brake pads on the RX8. After we were finished with the car we had dinner; grilled rib-eyes.  Then he caught me completely off guard with an early combination Father's Day and Happy Birthday gift.  :) (We won't be in town that weekend.)

That's a Springfield Armory Model 1911A1, Operator, caliber 45 AP, with tritium sights. A Surefire X300 tactical light slides on the integral machined Picatinny mount. It's an amazingly bright light. As J put it when you hit an intruder with that in the dark he'll want you to shoot him. Plus he threw in three Wilson Combat 8 round capacity magazines. The kid's got great taste.  :)

Off to the mountains to see how it works.  :)

Nice gun.  I need to expand my collection a bit -- I only have a couple.

Have you given it a workout yet Don?

I took it along when we went up last weekend but I did something stupid and managed somehow to sprain my right thumb when stacking some wood.  >:( I took two shots with the 1911 anyways and the thumb complained mightily. I hit the 25 yard target though.  :D It doesn't work so well in my left hand  ??? The Surefire sure is bright!! Played with it in the dark a little. Dang, you could put out an eye with that beam! At least dazzle 'em for a short bit.

So I got a cold pack on it, used some NSAID's, immobilized it (a stick and duct tape for the first one), using some warm packs now and then as well, and hope it'll be better sooner than later.  >:( >:(

81 hits out of 100 fired beat the crap out of my steel plate flipper target.

It's very smooth.  :)  Makes me wonder where my preference for revolvers came from.  ???

I thought you'd like it. They have an excellent reputation. I don't know why YOU prefer revolvers but my preference comes from:

I have always carried revolvers.
Revolvers can handle more powerful cartridges
Revolvers are more dependable although Auto's are getting there.
I can handload everything from indoor loads to case splitters in revolvers and have them function.
I can carry different loads in the chambers and select what to shoot by just cycling the action to that chamber.
I watched Dirty Harry 37 times :P

Numbers 1, 2, 3 and 6!

;D

I've put 500 rounds through it now and it's never missed a beat.

There's a 22LR kit conversion kit available. J said he's ordered one for "us".  And a slew of magazines. And a couple bricks of cartridges.
