I know it could be a safety issue, but for hidden storage for valuables in a very small, confined cabin space it could work. A person could put a pantry under the stairs and leave one wall only about 4 feet high. That would leave dead space between the wall and the first stair of the staircase. The drawer could be right there under the very first step. Am I making sense?

Someone came across that before, Jared... [cool] idea.
The main issue would be safety as you surmised. In many locales that idea would never make it through approvals, for more reasons that the safety angle.

It was also discussed briefly on another forum:

I'll pass. With my luck someone would leave a drawer open (probly me) and I'd kill myself. c*
Desdawg, the backwoods home forum is where I saw it first. I've seen you there a lot too.
