Title: Enclosing post and pier foundation?
Post by: PaleRider on February 06, 2008, 12:30:18 PM
How do you all secure your foundation to prevent wildlife from making a home under the sub floor. Does anyone have pictures or advice on how best to conceal the foundation and make it weather tight?

Welcome to the forum.  Are you talking about skirting between posts or in front such as rock walls, or something under the floor to the bottom of the joists?

I have seen it done many ways. The cheap way is to use pressure treated plywood. It wont last forever but it will get it closed in till a more permanent job can be done. Some choices are cement board, stone, brick, lattice with screening or even aluminum like used on mobile homes. All depends on the budget and the use for the space.

We are planning to leave ours open and seal the bottom of the floor joists instead except for a small area for the plumbing. In this area we are planning to create a cinder block short room 5'x12' and cover the outside walls in local stone. Kind of a PIA but the devil is in the details :)

I'm doing the same. Covering the underside of the floor and leaving the crawlspace open. IMO this is the best insuance against moisture problems in the future and makes for a warmer insulated floor. Takes a bit more planning to keep the plumbing concealed but it's doable.

Thanks to all who replied. I am thinking more of skirting the foundation and using masonry or river rock to add an attractive accent to the house. I am trying to critter proof it.

If your critter proofing I'm sure you have the those rodent relatives of Mickey in mind as well.
