Title: Replace the IRS with FAIRTAX
Post by: MountainDon on August 06, 2007, 08:22:33 PM
What do you think about a plan that would...
    * Abolishes the IRS
    * Closes all loopholes and brings fairness to taxation
    * Brings transparency and accountability to tax policy
    * Allows American products to compete fairly
    * Reimburses the tax on purchases of basic necessities
    * Enables retirees to keep their entire pension
    * Enables workers to keep their entire paycheck

I checked out the link to FairTax.org - read a little & listened to the debate.  I'll have to do more research - it sounds pretty good.  Duncan Hunter had a good explanation.  I notice they didn't let Ron Paul answer that question.  I wasn't able to watch the debates.

Congress is currently debating on how to "fix" the AMT, alternative minimum tax. Tell your congressman you want the AMT repealed. Then go a step further and tell your rep to get behind the FairTax. So far in 2007 there are 65 congressional members co-sponsoring the bill.

Almost anything has to be better than the current situation of loopholes for loopholes.

One twist I like about the FairTax is that it would hit drug dealers and others with illegal, non declared income as the taxes are all collected when the money is spent at retail.

Big Business and big money wants the system the way it is.  Keeps the rich guys from paying the tax.  They know that the current tax system is illegal and take advantage of that fact as they wish.  As long as they don't make a spectacle of themselves as the Browns did they get away with it.

The Browns were right- and were never shown the laws as there are none, but they made an issue of it, and even with no law, the gov could not and would not allow them to be successful no matter how unconstitutional their(gov) actions were.

You are assuming that everyone wants to pay taxes. Most of the rich pay a very low percentage of their real income in taxes. If taxes where fair they would have to pay more or atleast something. No way they are going to back a plan like this unless they can get a cap on it. But then it wouldn't be fair anymore. Look at the ways the wealthy avoid paying taxes and you'll see why the system is the way it is and it will be murder trying to get it changed.

I agree with Scott on this.

In a brief and incomplete nutshell,

FairTax removes all income taxes from all earned or investment income. At all levels of income.

Taxes are assessed/collected on purchases of new goods and services. No tax on buying used stuff.

Everybody gets a basic cost of living rebate check. So if you're scrapping by and can only buy bare necessities (poverty level) you aren't made to pay that large percentage out of your pocket. The wealthier who eat out at five star restaurants, for example, would pay taxes on that out of their larger incomes. Fairly so.

Ya' gotta read the book.

Sounds fair, but the elite control the US, so that's why they won't allow it-- they don't want to pay --in most cases.

When questions about the constitutionality of the IRS were to be discussed they were disallowed -- not even permitted to be asked per dubya.  I recent past alternate news item.
