Seems with a tall one like that you would want all of the structure functional and doing what it was supposed to do. Nice work. :)
Nice! So what was done wrong to cause this? No flashing/drainage path for water hitting the door?
Now that it's done right, where does the water running down the door go? Out and off the end of the balcony?
Also, how was this rotting found? Was something starting to sag or?

#1: Varity of reasons , poor papering technics ,paper lapped the wrong way,poor quality of paper the old lumber yard generic brand , poor flashing .
The old weather decks where flush with the interior floor so water could and did blow under the door, if you remember pictures looking off the deck this house is about 100 yards from Adrimalty inlet high wind out of the west blows right on this place.
#2: Ya , we lowered the decks 2" so there's a sort of "Dam" the water has to stack up agianst, we should have replaced that slider but they didn't wanta pay for a new one . The first guys cut off the bottom flange so it could sit flat on the old deck , a flange would be better , but hey some body's gotta pay for that stuff.
#3: The deck joist are level underneath for "flat ceiling " the joist top where cut for a 2 " pitch so yes the water will drain off the old decks where flat IIRC. Althought I wasn't in on the tear out part of the job.
#4: Blistered paint , a quick check with a pocket knife found a lot worst stuff, one of the old 6x6's was so rotten Travis was able to push it over with one hand once things where cleared out and shored up :o :o
But as John has said for something to fall down it has to be very bad , all the parts in ways do add strenght , if only weight pushing down , this winter we had some 75 MPH winds in that area .
#5: No the wall sheathing acted as a "box beam " in a way so she was still as straight as it was when they built it. For what thats worth ;D
