Title: minimum framing for deck?
Post by: optionguru on April 19, 2007, 01:32:05 PM
I'm looking to put in a very basic 16 x 16 freestanding deck / platform at my camp.  It will just be a nice level area to put a picnic table on and set up the camp stove.  The ground is damp so I figured I would dig some holes and use 12 inch sonatubes and connect to 4x4's.  How many footings do you think I need, this won't be supporting much weight, other than me :)  How would you frame it?

I should add that I've built a few decks and I think I tend to overbuild them, so I'm really looking for some best practices type of information.

Thanks,
Peter

Some of my bookmarked links on decks

http://www.decks.com/Calculators/JoistSpan.aspx?
http://www.dulley.com/deck/deck01.shtml

http://www.trex.com/deckdesigner/    online designer. once you know your footing depths, etc. this will produce 3D online rotatable drawings, as well as documentation in PDF form with views, cut lists, etc.
