Hello, I am wanting to build a small cabin on some hunting land of mine. I am wanting to something relatively small, that could be possibly moved if the land sold. I was thinking about something in the 8X16 foot range or so. The best idea I had for a general plan was one floor with a loft that would serve as the bed room. This would only be a weekend getaway and not a permanent residence by any means.
I was also wandering if it would be possible to create a 4x4 or so box over the loft that I could use as a place to hunt. I am a little confused on what would be the best type of roof to use with this design.
Does anybody have any rough estimates of what something like this would cost me in materials? It would not be plumed but would probably have minimal electrical outlets.
Gable roof, with a door from the loft at one end on to a porch which is your "tree stand."
Or, at that size, a building like a house Alex Wade built for himself, shed roof, with loft in maybe both ends, with a catwalk between them, a strange little triangular door that folds down to double as a balcony and an awning over the door? (some friends were incredibly cramped in their apartment, so I made them a wallhanging of the place--why I remember it--of course it wouldn't have helped their cramped-ness, and there were no railings or anything anywhere.

Qwerty, I built a similar sized cabin last year. Mine was 140 square feet and yours is 128, so the cost should be similar. Soup to nuts, with concrete tubes, concrete, 2x6 construction, good quality T-111, paint, five windows, quality roofing and flooring plywood, and lofts in both ends cost in the area of $2600.00. I bought all of the materials in NH where there is no sales tax and bought everything at a local lumber yard (worth every penny for their expertise) Good luck, Tony

This is what my uncle did, I might do the same thing. He bought a skidshed from the Amish that's 12x10. From there he made some modifications with it adding a window, putting a wood stove, propane heater and changing the door. He also finished the inside with getting installation, drywall and even electricity. He even had a fridge and stove in it. He paid $700 for the skidshed new. He had it for close to 4 years. After he had his cabin built he actually sold the skidshed for $1500, too bad he sold it a year before I got my land. The cool thing is that you can move it as long was you have a flat bed for it, and you can easily add on to it. I recommend that only if you didn't plan on moving it.

You might want to give the electric co. a call and see what it'll run to run in some power lines. In my part of the world, "some hunting land of mine" tends to mean it's off the beaten path. And might have power in the neighborhood and might not.
In my state, we have public power, which means they string a certain distance free. (2,000' for a set-up like you're planning) Most areas charge a fairly substantial amount, though. If that's the case, you might consider primitive.
I purchased an old Porta Potty (the kind you rent). Of course up in the mountains there is no service to pump one out and service it. The gophers saved me though. They dug a hole under the unit and chewed the bottom off the tank. So I guess now it is an outhouse. Darn gophers.
Ouch!! I would not want to be the first gopher to "break through" the bottom of that plastic basin!
I probably just started a run of off color threads......can't wait until Glenn says something like

Qwerty: I did the same thing as Woundedsky's uncle when I first bought my land. I bought an 8 x 12 garden shed from a local dealer and he delivered it the next day and set it up for me. The door was on the short end and we installed a window on the other end. Built a platform bed under the window with storage drawers under it. Had a little counter with a dishpan sink and a microwave and hotplate and a little dorm fridge. Couple of shelfs at the end of the bed held a little tv and radio and a few books. 4 feet of electric baseboard kept us toasty warm. The next year we added on a 12x20 pole shed across the door end and we have been building on ever since.

'Fraid not. Crawlspace only. But it does have a lovely and private fenced back yard.
I wonder if it's still on the market. Do you think anyone has put a deposit on it yet? :-/
