Title: Free article - How to determine rafter/joist sizes
Post by: John Raabe on October 25, 2006, 01:32:07 PM
Here is a new public article I have added to the PlanHelp (http://www.planhelp.com/public/main.cfm) site. It is a tutorial on joist and rafter sizing and how to use an on-line span calculator.

Incised Lumber???

I'm gathering that it's PT, but still not sure.

Also, where do you calculate the span from?  All the way across the foundation? or center to center? or inside edge to inside edge?

That takes a load off of my mind, Amanda.  I thought it had something to do with rednecks. :-/

Amanda: See my diagrams in the linked article. That is where I show how to determine the span.

(Incised lumber is the PT lumber you see peppered with injection marks. It is not the only way to treat wood.)

Yep, it would have helped if I'd scrolled down a bit.  I've never done that before--since the last time anyway.

I had run a search on incised lumber, but the best looking of the first few sites (no giant .pdf files!) refused to open--and for some reason I didn't think to look at the cache.
