Title: Alternative Septic System | Thoughts?

What are your thoughts about buying vacant land requiring an alternative septic system?  What are your thoughts about new alternative septic systems?  Any personal experience or words of wisdom?  Reassurances?  Thanks!

Most are pretty costly - some can be done by the DIY'er such as the sand filter on the mountain above me.  Having them done by a contractor can run 20000 to 30000.  Some of the new type filters can cost a lot initially then require ongoing maintenance and inspections.  

Probably best to avoid it if possible but we do have more information on this site if you can't.
