Title: U-Stair Size For Two Story Universal
Post by: Maine homestead on January 10, 2025, 08:43:48 AM
I am trying to figure out the u shaped stairs for the 20x34 universal two story cottage. The opening I have is 6'7.5 by 8'.5. The total height is 110.75in to the second floor. Based on my stair math, it seems that the landing can only be 36.5in wide. How would that meet code after putting up interior walls and trim which would equal more than 1/2in? The landing would be less than 36in and wouldn't meet code. Maybe I am missing something. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This is ~7-3/8" rise x 10-13/16" treads, one step on the landing. Those are 3'3-3/4" long treads so there is room for a midwall if desired.

Hey Don,

I am not 100% following (also my first time building stairs). Wouldn't the second flight of stairs be ~65" (6 treads x 10 13/16) from the landing to the second floor? The landing width would be smaller than 36"? I may totally be missing something here so apologies in advance, sometimes I just need an "explain like I'm 5 years old."

Yes! I realized after posting, but I think you understand how to fix it. If the 6 runs are 10" then you gain ~5" of landing width. You can tune the stairs within the code allowables.
