Title: Fire resistant hot tub cover
Post by: Dave Sparks on June 26, 2016, 05:53:56 PM
I had this fire resistant tarp that I would use to cover my hot tub.  We used it under a truck to weld and it caught on fire. Not good.

I have been looking for something better for this 8' x 8' cover. The links below do not look much better.  Any help appreciated !

I don't know if "rigid" would work for you or not.  I'm thinking a framework made of fencing rails and hardware, or aluminum conduit, covered with corrugated metal roofing.  ??

Dave, I have an old welding blanket that looks a lot like the one in the first link. It does work well when welding. Never tried it in a wildfire situation.

Google pyroblanket

I can generally burn a hole in about any fire resistant blanket when welding... resistant but not fire proof....

I generally get the cheap welding blankets at Harbor Freight... don't know if you would find anything suitable for a hot tub cover there though...  :)

Sorry, I thought this had to be a joke. Water!  ;D
The only thing I've found when welding, if something smells funny, you're on fire  d*

It is a joke !
Actually I just take the cover in the garage when there is a fire. The problem last time was the next morning I had a rat and couple tarantulas in there. My cats chickened out and went for the culvert in the road..... :(

Good ideas thank-you all!

Well Dave, I made a pond in the front yard and this spring a turtle showed up in it.

I think they may eat tarantulas, so maybe that could be an answer to part of the problem.  Be careful if eating in the hot tub though... They may also eat hot dogs.  [ouch]

Do they eat frogs?
It just amazes me how they can live thru a summer here without a heat pump or evaporative cooling.

Not sure about that..... every spring we have more frogs, but  they do go to the garden to eat bugs...  :) :)

I ended up with a canvas tarp that was flame retardant.  The tarps that Harbor freight had were fiberglass based and shed fibers and were said to be itchy.
Since my cats sometimes go up there I did not want make them anymore finicky than they are now.

Yes... we had a dog who would go in the barn and sleep in fiberglass insulation I had stored there.  She developed cancer and died from it.  :(

Hmmm..... I have long suspected this but, Amazon was following this conversation or more likely my search on Harbor Freight for welding blankets and sent me an offer for fire resistant blankets... another source for you, Dave.... Care for a box of cookies?   :)

Kinda funny that a guy with the last name Sparks is asking how to keep something from starting on fire  [rofl2]

It may be funny to you but once you have lived thru a wildfire there is nothing funny anymore about it.
Speaking of sparks I watched them spark off an intentional burn to help save me.
Those fire folks were great running around these hills at night with really poor maps.  d*

Hmmm Dave.... So does my wife...

I remember that night Dave,  you were in the barbecue pit...  I thought everyone over there was toast.... I was here on the mountain hosting lost firefighters... Yes,  the government gave them maps that didn't show roads,  but showed deer trails as roads,  and yet they tried to kick everyone out that knew where all the roads were.... I loaded my guns and open carried...  Officially known over firefighter radio as a crazy man with guns and a tractor.....  I did get respect though.  :)

The last of the old folks leaves on Saturday Glen.  I will be calling. We are looking forward to meeting her!
I always respect anyone with a gun! Part of the problem these days.
What would you do if someone reached for your gun and you had a badge on? :o

Looking forward to hearing from you Dave.... Hmmm reached for my gun and I had a badge on....

Hmmm I would likely have to meditate about the propriety of drawing it or resisting?    ???

Shoot first and live to ask questions later.

BTW, I think that this is what almost killed Eric Clapton when George Harrison was not happy with Eric and his wife getting on!

I had this fire resistant tarp that I would use to cover my hot tub.  We used it under a truck to weld and it caught on fire. Wrong calculation (https://www.studypug.com/geometry/points-lines-segments-midpoints-and-chords/linear-function-distance-formula)? Not good.

In this case, I would have contacted the company and sued them. This is very dangerous and could have happened to anyone. I hope you at least go your refund or something. Very bizarre and dangerous. Companies like that don't care about their employees either. Even when their employees start coming in late.

Well, it could only happen to someone who was welding. From over the years experience we always keep an extinguisher near when welding.

As far as sueing and getting involved with lawyers, I would rather deal with the fire. A much better taste in my mouth after  :(
