Title: window sizes
Post by: FarmerBill on July 01, 2015, 08:29:17 AM
We have the 2 story cottage plans and we have modified them a bit. We are probably going to order standard 3x5 windows but we really like the looks of a tall narrow window on the old two story farmhouses. I am afraid that on our 28 ft wide house that 3x5 windows are going to look square not rectangular. Anyone else run into this problem or have advice on window sizes?

We are going with this look, but I cannot seem to find the window sizes anywhere.

We are not going with this look, see how square the windows look? but perhaps it is all an optical illusion and the windows are the same.

May or may not be relevant here but egress is one factor to consider.  It could be that the wider windows were designed in because of newer safety code requirements.

Adam pretty well summed it up.  In our house we tried to play around going for the Craftsman Style or Arts and Craft style era look.  So want to use some of the narrow windows - but sure did not look right.  So we went single hung egress every where except we kept two in our bed room the bed centers in.  This allows for a lot more night air and easier to adjust.  That said our bed room also has two egress windows as well.
