Title: Fences, Awnings, and Sunrooms made with solar panels
Post by: Dave Sparks on June 09, 2015, 02:05:01 PM
I thought I would start topic for using solar panels in  and about homes. One of the most beautiful electronic uses of solar is from using Bi-facial Solar panels. These panels are different than the typical single side glass and soft plastic from 3M on the back. An architect could use these to really accent a home.  You can also do a Google picture search to get ideas by typing Bi-facial solar panels. I built an awning for a neighbor and it is really a great place to sit and look at. They look awesome in moonlight.

Sanyo use to have some really beautiful fences with their bifacial panels for 10 years or so. There is a new manufacture Prism now and a link below.
These folks have some pictures of awnings but I could not find fences. Pricey but really beautiful.

I have a friend that used panels similar to those you linked to as a roof over his porch.  Generates enough electicity to sell back to the grid in the summer, helps provide much of his needs in the winter.  I'll try and take a picture of it next time I am there.  It looks great and saved him money on conventional roofing for the porch.  I'll try to remember to ask him what he thinks the break-even point is.

Like you said, the panels make a beautiful roof for the porch, providing shade in the summer and rain protection in the wet moments that Washington seems to have now and again.

The Bifacial often produce 20% more power than their ratings with snow on the ground or with a white reflective ground surface.

Getting into the islands to avoid the mountains and the 96 degree noon temperature.  :)

Oh John Raabe I so wish I knew when the simple life was going to blast off.   rofl    Have not found that at all.  Retired and moved off to the hills.....   [shocked]  One fright train right after the other.....   [scared]  Got to build fence and thin some trees and finish the house, pour a couple side walks put in a yard, and then build a wood shed and then.......  ???  Time to pick apples.....  AHHH!!! YES the simple life of bluebirds and Jenny wrens singing.
