Title: shed dormer
Post by: rayian on May 16, 2015, 08:08:22 PM
I have a question about building a shed dormer. I would like to add one to the 16x28 simple studio cabin I'm planning to build. With the 12 ft studs I'll be using there will be 3 ft above the loft floor and if I want to extend this up to 7 ft for the outside wall of the shed dormer how would I add the extra 4 ft. Would bolting the 4 ft section to the double top plate be a suitable solution. Does anyone have another idea.

Typically it would be platform framed in that section, the main 8' wall, 2nd floor system, then a 7' wall on the 2nd floor. You'll probably need to use a structural ridgebeam at the peak.

Thanks for the reply.
What would be the problem with using a site built truss system rather than the ridgebeam?

Nothing if you can work out the engineering... it isn't a truss, which complicates things. The easy way is to size a beam to carry the upper end of the rafters. I sense that there are other roof framing details that need thinking through. A pic of what you are wanting to do would help.
