The best way to vent my dryer is a straight run in a walk in closet aong the back wall at floor level. I would insulate duct. I don't want to build a box to protect it but rather put a long wire shoe rack over it. I cant find anything in codes about protecting ducts, thoughts? Thanks
Remember also you have to replace that air you're venting out---at least the same size vent coming in

Dryer, not hvac
Use rigid aluminum 4" and not the flexible. In addition use a louvered outside wall cap that will close when not in use. Something similar to this

Still, if air is pushed out any vent it must come in someplace else. If the house is tightly built that could be down a chimney flue. Just off hand I do not know what the code says about dryer venting. If that was a fuel burning water heater, for example, it would require an inlet duct or be in a non habitable space.
If it is a run of more than a few feet I like the rigid tube John mentioned. Maybe some alum flex here or there to make curves / bends easier.
I used 3" PVC pipe to get thru wall and brick veneer then 90 degree down below my deck and then louvered outside wall cap.
Note that every elbow reduces your effective length by 4 feet. This is a pretty decent guide to how many linear feet is effective given the type of exhaust pipe used.
