Hi all,
I asked this question over on the owner builder thread and haven't gotten a response so I figured I'd try here. What are some ways to connect a built up 3ply 2x10 girder to the block perimeter foundation? We can't find a clear answer, any suggestions would be of much help. We liked the way Squirl connected his with solid bearing on the block, but aren't sure if that's possible with the 2x10's height.
Here are some things we have thought of, but we aren't sure which would work the best.

some simpson brackets that may work

A dropped girder usually rests in a beam pocket in the blockwork, never notch the bottom, tension side, of a girder... even if allowed to. You can use a 4" block at the outside, or a half block. You can form and pour that area to get height and should fill the cores down to the footing beneath a girder, it is a point load. I like room for a treated block under the girder but steel shims work. Don't forget to leave at least 1/2" of airspace on the sides and end of the girder to avoid rot. You can also build a pilaster into the wall by turning every other block up the line under the girder in and forming a toothed pattern wile using half blocks to form a column withing the foundation. Another way is to set a treated post on the footing up to the girder or building a block or poured pilaster inside the foundation, any of those should be attached to the block wall.
With a girder in a beam pocket I do notch the top side of the girder to accept the mudsill and spike it to the girder.
Thank you so much Don! That's how we'll do it.
