We finally found some land our way and made the leap. It is a very nice 12 acres and it is high and dry. We are located in coastal NC and the property is sandy soil, covered with small growth pines.
Here is my question, I have a choice of 2 seperate septic systems, one for the house and one for the barn or a larger single septic system closer to the house and then pump the septic from the barn which will be about 500 feet back. Any thoughts? I worry about all that underground piping. Can I get it deep enough so it can be driven over? Reliability?
I am already planning on the well supplying both, can the lines be run side by side?

i don't know what county you are in... but where I am (Wake County) they will send out a designer who will test, site and design a system for you for about $325. sounds like you may have sandy soil which might mean a cheap leach field. i have heard of 3 bedroom systems costing under 3k in the sandhills - which is quite inexpensive. you might get lucky and the designer might be the best person to consult on one or two systems.
I have someone coming out next week to look it over and give suggestions. He agreed that 500 feet was a long way to pump.

You do not have to pump water that far you shove it.
500' is not a long way to go. 1.25 or 1.50 black poly will handle it well. You should only have to pump it only from the well to a pressure tank. On you pressure tank there is a switch that controls your pump. So when you draw from the water supply it only turns the pump on when it drops below a set limit. Then the pump turns on and charges the pressure tank again to the upper limit. So it is a sort of two way limit switch. Then from there go to your branch piping. IE to the house and the barn and to the orchard and to the car and dog wash spot. Or really to your hydrants or here frost frees.
So you are not pumping that far rather you are shoving water down a pipe via pressure tank. I have 1200 or 1500 feet of pipe buried such as that. My longest run is to my RV pads about 600' feet away from the pressure tank and we have plenty of pressure using 1.25 inch pipe. If you are concerned about pressure use 1.50 pipe this produces less friction.
In your original post you as if the line can be run side by side? I do not understand because you just tee off of a water line to go some where else. You do not run separate lines from your pressure tank. In other words if I build a barn and I need water to it I dig to the closest water line cut the pipe install a tee and I have water. Everything works off the same pressure tank not separate water lines for everything. Now if you are asking if sewer lines and water can run side by side. Last I checked we still can but I have a real problem with that. Just do not like it one bit. Not one bit!
Thanks for the responses, I have applied for 2 conventional septic systems. One for the house and one for the barn. I am putting the well almost in the middle. I should know in about a week if it is approved.
