Title: Tar Paper and Nail Holes
Post by: drbuilder on March 09, 2013, 10:46:47 AM
I am about to roll tar paper on my roof.  For added traction, I want to nail lines of 2X4's on the roof.   Are there any special considerations for dealing with the nail holes that are left in the paper after the 2x4s are removed?  Will this create a problem with water penetration, should water get behind the metal or shingle roofing?  If so, how should I handle it?

It really depends on how long before the finished roof material is applied.  I would say button caps but the hole left by the 16d will be too large for them.  If you are going to immediately apply shingle or tin I would not worry about them.  But if you are going to be an extended time I would tuck another layer of tar paper under the lip of the ridge end of the previous sheet or buy a tube of roofing cement and as you proceed down to the eve just dap the hole when you move your cleat to the next lower level. Just appling a patch would not really work as it is not tucked up under the proceeding seam and the water if any will just seap in around the exposed edges.

I agree, if the roofing is going right on don't worry about it, I usually need my toeboards back. We usually have some ends of rolls of window flashing tape around at about the time I'm stripping the toeboards off the roof. As I pull off a 2x I tear off little pieces of that sticky tape and stick it over the holes. Works on the synthetics too.

I usually lean out if possible and nail the first row of paper and the bottom toeboard. If it's steep that board needs to be low enough to be removed from a ladder. That one doesn't come off the roof till everyone is down from that phase. I've even shamed Michael Jackson all the way to the edge of a 4/12 sidewalk pitch on a loose piece of plastic. They don't call em accidents for nothing  d*, leave yourself a bottom stop as long as you can.
