Title: diy brick chimney? possible?
Post by: containercabin on December 04, 2012, 08:33:36 PM
In the process of convincing the wife to accept the idea of building a 144sqft cabin we came across this:

So now I need to find out if this is possible to build...

Two issues:

1. The 144sqft no permit rule is not meant for cabins. But in general do you think that putting such chimney really pushes the envelope?
2. How much would something like that cost to build?

1.   Yes. 144 is the max.  It would get flagged around me.  You would be surprised how many of those sweet nice neighbors would be the first to turn you in.
2.    The concrete interior and clay flue not as much, but the last time I checked at $.75 per brick, my guess would be $500 in bricks.

I personally would prefer a wood stove in anything but a mild climate.  Most fireplaces (especially the kind pictured) lose more heat than they give off.
