Title: Crossion and Pressure Treated Wood.
Post by: Redoverfarm on August 30, 2012, 09:17:01 PM
I have noticed in a few Owner/Builders foundations  flashing being installed as a termite shield.  With the new Copper based preservative being used in the Pressure Treated lumber there is an issue of corrosion especially on aluminum which is basicly what the majority of the flashing consist of for termite shields and decks.  I read a good article in Fine Homebuilding which addresses these issues.  They suggest using copper flashing  ($$$   d*) or galvanized flashing.

"Perhaps the most important point to keep in mind relating to copper-based wood treatments and galvanic corrosion is to avoid aluminum flashings altogether. Aluminum corrodes quickly in the presence of high copper concentrations."

As an alternative I was told years ago to put a moisture barrier such as #30 felt or Grace water shield between the aluminum and the pressure treated wood to shield this contact between the two to eliminate contact with each other to avoid corrosion.  As a side note to termite shields you need to bend approximately 30 deg lip downward to be effective.  Apparently when they try to make this manuver at that degree to continue upward they will fall back onto the ground.

As I continued to read the article they mention that builders also fail to take into consideration galvanized nails when attaching other framing members(studs, sheeting and joist) to mud or sill plates and rim joist.  This is more important on slab construction in tornado or hurricane areas where over time the fastners for sheeting and studs will corrode and essentially not hold the structure to the sill or concrete slab.

There is a lot of good information in this article which can be seen at  http://www.finehomebuilding.com/how-to/articles/new-pressure-treated-wood-decks.aspx

A good reminder, John.

ACQ lumber was a big mistake, even ZMAX hardware corrodes , add the vycor will help , but it's a PITA and a added cost.

This Zmax A-35 had been installed about 1 year when I took this photo.

All that white fuzz is corrosion, I should stop by that place one day when I'm down that way to see what it looks like now.
