Finally finished my material list for my single story with attic trusses. I already have the trusses picked out and it will be on slab so the materials are just downstairs walls along with upstairs subfloor and roof plywood. Basically, all the wood that is going in the house. Anything else I should make sure to list?
Any last hints before I send this out? I have a local supplier in Rusk (where I'm building) and a couple of big box stores here in Lufkin (where I list now) like Home Depot, Lowes, and McCoys. With delivery, I'm thinking the local Rusk place will win but we will have to see.
Anything special I should request for the delivery?
thanks
Austin
There are Lowes coupons you can buy on ebay for 10% off orders up to $5000. Home depot will usually match them. An extra $500 off each order might be worth it.
Check the return policies, quality of the materials they give you, reputation, etc. There was a mention of this in the thread: http://countryplans.com/smf/index.php?topic=12312.0
Some stores will try and pass off on delivery or bulk what they can't sell to people picking up. Also there is usually a certain amount of crap in the pile from the manufacturer. You might want to order a little extra if you can return the rest when you are done. It can be very usefully to have an extra few boards around for tilting, bracing, blocking, when something is cut too short, etc. Some take returns up to 90 days.
All good hints. I forgot about the Lowes 10% off.
thanks

You can get those coupons free at the post office. They come in the change of address kits, just ask for one at the counter
You may want to have them give you a "item quote" ... with you doing the material selection and most of the pick-up yourself. Once you have the quote, the pricing is established ... and you just work off the quote list. Selecting the framing pieces yourself, in the yard, is a great advantage. (Of course, "special order" materials ... those things not on the shelf/ in the yard ...are a different matter.) This method helps in marshalling materials at the worksite ... as you have less wood, and other materials, on hand that requires protection. An exact quantified materials list is only needed for your personal budgeting.
I made an arrangement like this with a local (Ace Hardware) building supply yard. The quote, good for a year, gave me good pricing as though I was buying the entire quantity at once ... even though I picked up materials as I needed them. I just handed over my quote sheet each time I made a purchase, so that the cashier would know to give me the established discount pricing. Such an arrangement avoids trying to quantify exactly the total amount of materials needed ... as the quote is for each item that will be needed: .... #2-2 x 4 x 8,... #2-2 x 4 x 12, ... 1 sheet 1/2" CDX,... 1 bag Portland cement,... 1 trip to site with flatbed (this was included for loads too large for my utility trailer), ...etc, etc.
i like mccoys but i dont have one close. i have a parkers 5mi frombmy build in woodville and a lowes in jasper 30+ mi away. parkers has better wood. some things are more expensive but they deliver for $25 vs. $80ish for lowes.
lowes wanted $29 for 2x12x16 treated, parkers was $34 which i thought was a bit much untill i realived parkers had grade 1 and lowes was grade 2. unfortunatly their stock is limited
Yes, I'm hoping that I can find a place that will do multiple deliverys as I need or something similar. That is one reason why I'm only having them quote the 2x6s, OSB, ply and roof. That way I won't have tons of material on site that will sit there for months. I'm hoping that I will have some quotes back by the end of the week. I will post in my build thread what I find.
thanks
