Title: Lowe's vs. Menards
Post by: keyjoy on June 30, 2012, 01:20:35 AM
A new Menard's store opened in a town up north of us. It's probably 65 miles away.We got ads in the mail. Seems to be GREAT on prices. I got online and checked their prices for 2X10's for floor joists. They are $4.00 cheaper than Lowes. We have a Lowes in the town closest to us, about 25 miles away. My question is will Lowe's price match? It would save a lot in gas to just get the stuff at Lowes We could pick it up on our way home from work but we probably would save enough at Menards to make it worth the trip.
Thanks for your help and yes i know I could just call Lowes and ask but its after midnight and they are closed. :)

Ours will match in store pricing only, not internet prices. Of the EXACT same product. Problem is, Lowes & HD all have CUSTOM made stuff (ie carpet I know of) made just for them so it's difficult to find a match.

I called Lowe's and asked and they said they will call and verify the price at Menards and give us that price.  [cool]

Lowe's also gives an Armed Forces discount. No piggybacking with other discounts though.

We have the big three Home Depot, Lowes and Menards, 2 of each within 20 miles or  so.  3 of them are within 1/4 mile of each other.  I've been known to hit all three to price compare.  Menards does have weekly sales, and their sale items are hard to beat.  Their rebate system is excellent.  You can expect to receive a Menards rebate in about 3 weeks.  Unlike some which take months.  They never expire so it doesn't bother me that I have about $600 of them sitting on my desk right now.  Menards carries more off-brands than HD or Lowes, and usually a cheaper priced off brand.   HD and Lowes will sometimes carry a higher end product, better in quality but also more expensive.  In the past HD and Lowes clearly had better lumber.  But, IMHO, Menards has substantially improved their lumber quality.  I no longer need to sort through half a bunk to find enough lumber.  Because of sales, I am buying more at Menards than the other put together.  In my area, the smaller contractors really use Menards a lot, perhaps because to them, a price point makes a big difference.  Privately owned, Menards would be the #3 improvement store were it publicly traded, and if it were traded, I would seriously consider buying their stock.  I have owned both HD and Lowes stock in the past.  To a certain extent, it is a matter of convenience.  But when certain items systematically go on sale at Menards, HD and Lowes do not compete price-wise and they get the sale.
