We have a friend who is a framer/ roofer/ / etc and he was sharing this story with us last weekend.
He and the other framers are presently building a house that is over 7500 sq. ft.
The final house plan is made up of 3 different plans that the future homeowners found and put together to create a plan they liked.
Our friend Sam told my DH that there are only 4 straight walls in the whole house and the remaining walls are octagon.
The plan was so badly thought out and designed that that the front door was actually going nowhere. :-?
The homeowners had to sit down and create another front entrance.
Sam said in his 15 + years of building that he had never seen such a mess.
Our county does not require county inspections or approved plans........shucks we don't even have a health board.
The only thing that requires a permit is a septic system.
We were aware of all this when we started building but we are building to code and above ...........don't want any future problems!

These stairs that lead to the ceiling are just one of the many
bizarre features that Mrs. Winchester designed and had built.

Glenn,
That's too funny! ;D
I wonder ...... where do these people get the money to build these mistakes?
Well - Sarah's was intentional -She had the Winchester Rifle money, but she was walking to the beat of a different drummer -the upside-- she kept a lot of contractors working and created something that brings in tons of revenue each year. :)
I've seen stairs rather like that--but it was in a big house that had been cut up into apartments. Guy I knew lived in half--IIRC--the ground floor, had his bed half-way up the nice and wide stairs, so he could walk up the stairs and get into bed where it was about 20" from the steps, use the stairs going on up as his bedside table and bookcases, have storage under the foot. The living room of the old house made it a really pretty apartment, although kitchen and bathroom were rather more than marginal.
The story was on PBS awhile back, story goes that she believed that when the house was done, she would die. Soooooooooo just kept building.
