Title: Foam rocks and Dryloc
Post by: Tinga on October 18, 2011, 09:43:32 AM
Heya guys, lurker Tinga here. Nowhere NEAR close to building, but I'm a pretty visual person and construction and architecture has always held a place in my heart.

There was a house build a while back ( I believe that he rented it out, half earth bermed) and he was having difficulty covering the foundation.

Back when there was a time I had fishtanks. Show tanks and breeders for African Cichlids. I now buy Jeeps which are terribly MORE expensive, but so much fun.
In a smaller tank I did, I made my own rock background using the polyurethane rigid foam insulation and a product called Dryloc. Couple of minutes to hours of fun, a steak knife
and gorilla glue and you can have your own rocks. Not sure of the applications, but It might have worked for that fella.

What I used:
Foam
Steak Knife
Gorilla Glue
Dryloc
Powdered Concrete Dye (in charcoal and brown)

What I started with. That was 2" foam with several cut out rocks gorilla glued to the face. I also glued some to the bottom of the tank.

First Coat ( kinda ugly)
Dark coat goes on first. Dryloc was made for lining cisterns, and after MONTH of PH testing and heavy metal tests everything was GREAT.No dead fishes. I mixed several batches of dryloc mixed with the concrete coloring. The dryloc has a sandy texture to it, so it really helps the rock look. If you want smoother rocks, sandpaper works well.

Start working up with lighter colors. It's really fool proof.

But Like I said, not sure WHAT this can be used for. We secured it to the tank with silicon and it stayed. Maybe you want an insulated shed for a pump or fake rock covering a cistern hatch..I dunno possibilities are endless and sure of a heck a LOT cheaper than those fiberglass rocks!

Thanks for the tutorial, Tinga.  Somewhere I may find a use for that info ...you never know.
